| Super Moderator ![]() | Don't laugh... Ways to reduce recoil on 300 RUM
Welp, I got to shooting my RUM again, and the same gun I said was fine with recoil while standing and firing with a jacket is a major pain to shoot from a bench. And to my horror, the handloads we used having a medium powder charge and rated at a lower velocity than the factory loads (same bullet weight) had a HEAVIER recoil. Welp, I'm thinking of switching from 180gr to 168gr, and thinking of other ways to reduce the recoil. Being that it's a Savage 111G, it's pretty light, so it can afford to take on some weight. Is it a commonly accepted practice to remove the buttpad, drill into the buttstock, and pour lead into it? Of course being removable would be nice too. In addition, I'd like to add a muzzle brake/flash hider. Being 30 caliber, I'm sure there are plenty of military brakes out there that would do great, and being bolt action, it doesn't matter if it's also a flash hider. I don't want one that would push the muzzle down, as I expect this would hinder accuracy. Nor would I want one that interferes with the front site. Removeable would be nice too, but maybe I'm being too picky.

The basic Century brake as used on their FALs and CETMEs seems to be pretty effective - my CETME is a pure pleasure to shoot and doesn't jump at all. The brakes are available separately. You could switch to a heavier target style stock, too. And maybe the Pacmeyer Decelerator buttpad. All would help to tame the beast.

You mean the "Muzzle Blast Amplifier", BD? They do work good though.

Yeah, Wes. They are great, as long as you don't stand beside someone shooting it! Got to be careful, I burned a hole in my "bench blanket".

Another thing was looking for the brass, never saw a gun fling it so far.
