30-06 build finally gets done.

Some time back I picked up a lightly used less than 50 rounds down the tube) Remington 700 in 30-06. It came with a broken scope and a Harris Bipod. I changed out the scope and shot it a bit. For an out of the box rifle it was darn nice.

Saved my pennies and bought a Shilen Barrel in the white, 26 inches with a 1 in 10 twist, with a Remington Varmint contour. Also got a Holland recoil lug.

Saved some more pennies and picked up a Choate Ultimate Varmint Stock.

I located a gunsmith that didn't charge me an arm and a leg who trued the action and installed the shortened Shilen barrel. I had him shorten the 26 inch barrel to 22 and recrown.

I installed the barreled action in the new stock, added the same old scope, gave everything a coat of paint until I can afford the cerakote job.

After the 50 round break in suggested by Shilen it shoots really nice. 5 inch groups at 800 yards so far. Still playing with the loads. Will post some targets as soon as I can.

Here's the Remington.

Last thing an elk will see, except for the bright flash.

That's sub-minute of angle performance. I'm glad your investment is paying off. One question: why did you shorten the barrel? To make it easier and lighter to carry when hunting?

Nice rifle Ron, look forward to the target pics. What are you loading for it?

Cyrano,

I'm sure as I shoot it more it will open up a bit. I think I just got real lucky that day. I normally don't shoot that well.

Yeah, I shortened it to make it easier to carry, though it's still heavy as all get out, compared to what it was in it's original stock and barrel.

Para,

178 Grain Hornady BTHP over 54.5 grains of IMR 4350. Don't have a chrony..yet..but the book says it should be leaving the muzzle at 2700 FPS. I'm also zeroed at 300 yards.

Thanks, Swedes. I do kind of like this new look it has, as well as the way it shoots.

Put up a pic of a target on another thread, thought I should put one here as well. This was shot at 300 yards using 6 rounds of Hornady A-Max and 6 rounds of Hornady SST. It seems to like 168 grain and heavier. Both were factory loads.

The group (6 rounds) closest to the bull is the A-Max and the group on the left of the bull is the SST. The flier to the right is actually from the SST group. I had a piece of hot brass from the shooter to my left lodge in my eyeglass frame and I pulled the shot. Shot from the bipod with a piece of 2X4 under the butt. No change to the scope dope.
