Too close to call

Well, they are both excellent cartridges established in the marketplace. Personally, I feel there is little difference upon which to make a decision as this one is just too close to call. Personally, I like the .270 but do want you to know that is just a preference and the .308 would be just as good for me.

If you haven't read and understood it thoroughly, re-read Samuels post!!

Here is a good link for you

try it with the calibers you mentioned and see the stats for yourself.

Personally . . .

There is so little difference in the field I do not think it matters. The idea would be to choose one and become proficient with it. As a preference, I like the .270 but this is a forum so you will get many votes for the .308.

Another round I like (although not a part of your post) is the 7mm/08.

.....Uh are the muleys and elk wearing kevlar where you are from or something? I have never had any probs bagging a muley or an elk with a 308. My brother has the 270 and tags a muley every year he is lucky enough to draw a tag. With nosler balistics in the 270 he bagged a nice bull elk as well this past season. It's 80% shot placement and only 20% for the caliber of the cartridge.

I agree with Sam, are you (KW5891) sure it wasn't a young elk? If it was a whitetail I want to hunt in your neck of the woods.

Usually I use Remington core locked rounds 180 Grain for both deer and elk. My brother on the other hand I can't say for sure for when it's muley season but he used Nosler balistic tip with a grain size unknown to me as I didn't go with him. I will have to ask him the grain he used tomorrow. Last elk I bagged (1988 consequently the last time I was able to go for elk) shot base of the skull, he was so close I could ave hit him with a baseball bat. If he hadn't snorted I would have slept through the last day of the season. The 3 previous I had the pleasure of shooting were within 200 yards or less all placed perfectly through the heart. Of course back then my hands don't shake like a parkinsons patient who drank 7 red-bulls. Now I am pretty aprehensive about hunting because of the shaking, I don't want a suffering animal on my conscience resulting from poor shooting.

I bought one of the new Ruger Hawkeye rifles in 308 and I got overlapping bullet hole accuratcy at 100 yards with Remton 150 grain core lokts.
I'll give the 180 grain a try before our Deer season comes this year.
We don't have the big game here like yall have, just white tail deer...A.H

Ive Hunted with the .270 and it is great on whitetails, heavy blood trail just about everytime. I have friends that hunt with the .308 and havent heard any problems out of it and ive heard the .308 is pretty accurate as well as the .270. I know that the .270 hasnt got alot of recoil also

It may be as accurate, but I'll bet it isn't as flat shooting as a .270. It would depend on what I'm hunting in which one I would use. In heavy brush, I would want a heavier bullet. Clear fields of view, give me the .270.

I consider the .270 a fltter shooting round maybe better for longer ranges as you don't have as much hold over. I like the .308 because it's shorter and you can get the same barrel leght in an over all shorter gun.
Having said this, I quit hunting with scoped long range guns some time back. I use old Cowboy guns and try to get closer.

This little round here is the one that I think might be the most effective all purpose round for the .270.

Well, im just not sure, i tend to grab for the 308 because usally its gonna leave a bigger entrance and exit wound, not always the exit, but .30 is bigger then .27. I like to leave a good blood trail if i cant always drop em in their socks. But oh do i love both rounds, only thing is, i dont have a 270, and i do have a 308 . Both great proven rounds, cant go wrong with either;] And hell id love to see a 400 some odd pound whitetail, i could then tell the dock i really am nuts and have him believe it, haha.

7mag,
You said a 270 is to light for elk and mulies!
There are thousands of dead mulies and elk who would disagree with you!!
But to answer your question. If you want a hunting rifle I would go with the 270. If you want a range rifle I would get the 308.

NOTE TO MOD: Shouldn't this be under 'General Rifle'???

One venue of choice would be to

buy a Browning with the B.O.S.S. sytem of barrel control.
This really does move the .270 into the ultra-performance
arena.
