Ok people got me to recheck the reloading cost of the 270....about the same as my 458mag....so crossed that off the list...I went to wal-mart local gun store was just way too high....Wal-mart special order was out of stock for almost every 223...ended up ordering a Howa Variteer in 223 for $360....should be here in a week or so |

I have a hard time believing 270 Win costs the same as 458 Win Mag. But it may have been a wise choice since I now recall that the 7400 was designed to discourage reloading and thus is obstinate with reloads. How long's the barrel on that thing? Unless I was planning to hunt small animals with it, I'd have picked 308 myself.

The cost to relaod the 270 at 60 grains of powder is the same grains I load my 458 plinking loads...so about 110 rounds per pound for both....bullets for the 458 (Remington 300gr JHP) are $10 for 100 and "cheap" 270 bullets were $12 per 100....both primer cost are the same....so aside from brass cost (270 cheaper)...the 458, 270 and 17HRM all cost about the same .20-25 cents a shot to shoot (17hrm a $11 per 50)... My big saveings on the 223 is that I have 1000 rounds of loaded reloads..so brass bullets..powders and dies already.....and for paper punching what the heck. I looked at 308...have the MAS 36 says 308 but shoots like a shotgun Figure the $$ saveings on reloading stuff can go towards a nice scope. Plan is to use this at the 100yrd range with the 458, 45/70, and 17hrm....soda can and target hunting |

Nice stick DL! We want range reports!! I looked at a Howa varmint rifle last year - laminate stock, fluted fat barrel etc., it was a pretty neat rifle. I still have it on my want/need list!

Howa makes the barrel and reciver action for a number of companies...or so I have read....These companies include weatherby and remington as well as custom gun makers. Legacy sports imports the Howa along with the Puma lever action rifles and some other stuff along thoses lines. I have read nothing but good concering the rifles and I expect it to do well....probly better than my amature reloads will let it shoot Surpriseingly a lot of companies use/purchase parts from suppliers who may/may not market their own brand of firearms. Hi-point I read somewere purchases its barrels from Marlin.....I think this brand Howa is not well known only because their assembled barrel/action bear the name of the Big company they supply.....I pick it up today and hope to be shooting tommorw (its realy windy today..hope it dies down)....so we will see how it does. |
