| "Strawman Sales" don't apply to family - a father buying his son a gun is an honored tradition, except maybe in deepest darkest Chicago or Manhattan Island. Even Sarah Brady bought her son a hunting rifle! So much for her vaunted antigun rhetoric. Might be a good idea though, to take your father to your friend's place, teach him some basic gun-handling skills and get him a bit of experience with them. That will give him confidence, for when he deals with the FFL to pickup your rifle. If you really luck out, your dad will like it, and enjoy sharing your interest - you may have a new 'shooting buddy'! One minor thing too - capitalization is our friend . . . Which Mosin-Nagant are you getting? They are like Lays Potato Chips - you can't stop at just one! Hehehe. And you may be able to branch out in your interest. The Mausers and Swiss K31's are very nicely priced right now. Enfields can be had for under $100, but you have to be careful not to get stuck with the Indian junk. This forum will be a wealth of info for you.

| sum1_special, IMHO, I would think that you (and your father) should keep your brother out of this transaction and change your approach from "get Dad to pick it up" to "see if Dad would consider buying that firearm as a gift to you (and subsequently accept responsibility for the firearm and what you do with it)". It is illegal for an individual to purchase a firearm from a dealer with the intent of distributing that firearm to another individual who is not legally capable of purchasing firearms. It is not illegal for a parent to buy a firearm as a gift for a child (as long as the parent understands the legal and perhaps moral obligations that go along with that act). The FAQ below was copied from the ATF website: Q: May a parent or guardian purchase firearms or ammunition as a gift for a juvenile (less than 18 years of age)? A: Yes. However, possession of handguns by juveniles (less than 18 years of age) is generally unlawful. Juveniles may only receive and possess handguns with the written permission of a parent or guardian for limited purposes, e. g., employment, ranching, farming, target practice or hunting. [18 U. S. C. 922( x)] |

| Hey, welcome. Nice to see another 17 year old around here. Also very nice to see someone interested in buying the 91/30 soon too. I've got the money, but haven't made any preperations on buying it. I think I might go through a different FFL licence person than our local gun store. Not the best people to handle this sort of thing. Well, good luck to you and your search.

| Big Dog, you lifted a weight off my shoulders, thought i was doing something illegal; bad news when your dealing with something as deadly serious as firearms . thanks i kinda exaggerated when I said no one in my family knew anything about firearms, though. i was mostly refering to my older brother, who is reluctant to go get it as he thinks buying a firearm will put a black mark on his personal 'record' and hinder his chances at a good career or get him in trouble will his college officials or something. my father, on the other hand, was a lieutenant in navy back in Romania so he must know quite a few things about guns in general, though the last thing he shot was a .22 rifle. im sure were going to have some fun with this rifle, and others like it(i've have been drooling over plenty of other surplus rifles over the years, including the ones you mentioned). thanks for the advice guys, and by the way its the Model 91/30. I had my heart set on getting it from aztec guns but ever since they quit selling the m38's and 91/30's i settled for aim surplus |

| nice to see you too steel warrior. and good luck on finding a good dealer, i seem to remember going down yahoo's yellow page listings calling every dealer asking if they do dealer transfers. finally settled with a shop fairly close to my home charging only 10 bucks for the transfer. hell, you'd be amazed at how much some people will charge(one of the dealers actually wanted me to pay $50 fee for a $60 rifle |

| Yeah, that is what my dealer would do. I think I could go through a friend of my dads who has a FFL licence or a C&R. I will tell dad to get in touch with him. Good luck.
