| Super Moderator ![]() | Welcome NeoEnigma, Before moving to Alaska to hunt Big Game, I hunted Deer and Hogs in Florida, Georgia and South Alabama. Alabama hunting demanded shots sometimes at very long range (300 yards), I used a 30/06 with 150 gr. silvertips and was very successful. My suggestion is to locate a local gun club/ shooting range and see if you can try out some different rifles and calibers. This way you can find something you are comfortable with. When you are shooting at Game , you NEVER FEEL THE RECOIL due to the adrenaline pumping, and you can shoot the largest Magnum , but target shooting you feel the recoil. Consider also, if you Think you may want to hunt larger game in the future , then choose a caliber that will fill the bill. I still have my 06 but I now hunt with a Winchester Model 70 in .300 Win Mag for everything from Moose and Buffalo to Deer, Caribou, Doll Sheep, and Grizzly Bears ! Flat Shooting, Recoil not excessive, Various loads available, lots of bullet energy...Reasons why I chose the .300 Win Mag. Rich

| Banned | A Savage in .30'06 will kill anything you want to with merely the accuracy of Savage's superior iron sights to 100 yd.s and that's a fact! And without the high price of the others, you can afford a nice scope that will bring out the real beauty of a Savage. Plus they're already drilled and tapped as most are. Mine has easy to see markings for range adjustments and three screws take it down. Mine is a 111 Chieftan left hand bolt action in .30'06 and shoots and looks beautifully. A .308 has more kick than the '06. The '06 is good for those rare 500/1000 yd. shots if needed. Savage's reputation is one of excellent quality affordable guns. They are THE most accurate straight out of the box mass produced guns on the market. Last edited by BFRANKlin; 02-17-2007 at 02:12 AM. |

| Troll B' Gone ![]() ![]() | I would look into one of the Savage package rifles, they are accurate rifles, and tough as nails. And I would get that gun in .270 Last edited by Midas; 02-17-2007 at 02:47 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

| Senior Member ![]() | Neo I too am a fairly small statured dude bein 5'7'' at 130lbs soak and wet. I have been huntin for the past few years with my girlfriend's 1903 in 30-06. honestly I would find a heavier 30-06 (approximatly 6-8lbs) bolt action rifle. DONT put a scope on it because if you are in the brush all that thing is gonna do is make it very difficult for you to aquire the target and by the time you do it will be to late. trust me I know the 1903 has a scope on it. but make sure that the rifle sits right on your shoulder. so that budget should straight into a nice rifle I do believe you could buy a remington 700 for 600 bucks I could be wrong.

| Mr. Fixit ![]() | Ruger is a fine rifle but they are pricier than a Savage or even your average Wal-Mart Rem 700. Being as the original poster says he is small-statured and recoil-shy, I would suggest the Savage in .243 or 7mm-08.
