Quite possibly my most freakish idea yet

You guys have probably gained that once I master some part of WECSOGing I have to take a step further in what would hopefully be skill, but would in any case be drastic.

It started with attachments to existing guns.

Then militarization parts replacements.

Then doing a drastic conversion to a military magazine and dressing it in all custom furniture.

Building an AKM pistol as soon as the AWB expired

And now I'm in the midst of a AKM build in 35 Remington. The pictures are too horrid to even show right now, but the end result will look alright. I'm actually designing my own receiver modified from the AK design and behaving like a cross between an AK and a FAL.

But those are all NOTHING compared to the insane idea I currently have in mind.

You guys all joke about black powder AKs and 1911s, right? Yeah, ha ha. Well I've for some time been looking into designing my own gun from the ground up. Either a straight blowback pistol caliber carbine or a very crude gas operated rifle. Recently I was thinking along the lines of a detachable magged shotgun. But now I think I've got it. You are right to be afraid or to roll your eyes.

How about a tilting bolt semi-automatic rifle chambered for and tuned for...
Drumroll...
Black powder loaded 45-70? I have a design in mind which would be particularly good for rimmed cartridges. The 45-70 was designed for BP and took down plenty of buffalo back in the day. The result of such a thing would certainly not be anemic.

But all that corrosive black powder in the action? Well, there are stainless barrels for that round. And for such a light round, perhaps one could consider a material not as strong as steel that's easy to machine and doesn't corrode as much - aluminum. Hmm, good material for machining large parts, like a receiver, bolt carrier... bolt? Not sure, I'd have to run some numbers, but not a terrible idea. The AR-17 I believe was made of all aluminum.

Alright, flame on... tell me what a dumb idea it is... But you know secretly that you'd want one.

Well, I would caution against aluminum or any soft material on the bearing surfaces of bolt and receiver where they lock. Maybe a block of titanium in these areas?
A 'self-cleaning' gas system like the AR-18 uses might work too. Especially if the gas piston could be easily removed from the front, for cleaning.
I kind of like the idea, but then, I like the oddball guns!
One problem though - imagine all that smoke when you pump out ten quick ones! "Cough - cough - cough . . . "

Wonder what JEB Stuart could have done with his troops armed with semi-auto muskets!?

This is as close as anyone could probably get to a beltfed brown bess.

Correction - I have a beltfed Brown Bess. I carry the cartridges in a box on my belt. I take them from the box, bite off the tip, prime the pan, and load the rest down the muzzle. After firing, the next cartridge is automatically taken from the belt and loaded the same way - by me.

The insert for bearing surfaces sounds like a good idea. Would probably use stainless steel over titanium.

It would depend on how you did it. You would have to make sure that the action is firmly mounted while the barrel is free-floated (not touching the stock.) Other elements are all dependent on the user, ie cheek weld, buttstock length and shape, weight, grip shape, comb, and all sorts of other factors.
