| Member | So it should have sights and not a scope? I've been checking out .308's and am pretty close to getting one. I'm going to have a scope on mine with no iron sights. I've read that the .308 is used the most at some long range rifle competitions because of the fact that there isn't much air in the case so the powder dosen't push more at wierd angles on the bullet as its traveling out, because if there's more air like in the .30-06 there would be more propellant towards the bottom of the bullet which could perturb things in an unfavorable way I guess. The .308 is suppossed to be the most intrinsically accurate round above .243/6mm goofy cartridges because of physics and stuff based on a few things I've read off of the internet. This is going to be my only rifle by the way. It might have a 22" barrel and I'm going to hunt all sorts of animals with it at different ranges. Accuracy over energy. Hitting a moose in the heart beats blasting off a deer's leg. A semi-scout or wannabe scout rifle because of the scope. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | My idea would have iron sites AND a scope. That is, a peep site at the rear and a long eye relieve scope ahead of the action. If you want one with scope only, and are not trigger picky, Savage/Stevens makes a budget gun often found in the $200-300 range. I'm looking into a Rem 700 BDL myself. The new budget Remingtons have no sites, so that might fit your scope mounting plans. I hope to eventually get two 308 bolt guns. One scout and one heavy barreled target gun. The target gun would probably be a Rem 700 VLS, but I won't rule out Savage. I already have a 8-32X scope for it.

| Super Moderator ![]() | NOOOOOO!!!! Way too expensive, ugly as sin, not all that accurate, and lacking the clear top loading that other rifles have. No thanks, I'll take a Rem 700, just need to equip it correctly.

| Senior Member | if you want an Intermediate eye relief scope, go with leupold FX-II 2.5x28mm Scout. as for mounting it forward of the bolt, im lost as to howe to mount it on a Remington, cant find anyone who makes a scout scope mount for the 700. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | If something used the front two mounting screws on the receiver and the rear site mount to attach a scope, and the rear mounting screws on the receiver, that would be just perfect on a 700 ADL synthetic like the ones I've seen in other calibers. I don't really need to chop the barrel, 22" is really ok for me. Being bolt action it will still be much smaller and lighter than the semis I'm used to.

| Senior Member | Better Idea: Remington Model Seven LS (used $600) Burris Scout Scope Mount ($200 for it, rings and Installation, one hole need to be drilled and tapped on a model with sights three without.) Leupold Scout Scope (about $200) |

| Super Moderator ![]() | That's a grand. That's scary. No thanks. 1917 Enfield: $300ish for a sporter with sites intact EER Scope by Target Sports: $50 Scout Scope Mount: Whatever, might make it myself. Alternately, a Savage Scout would fit the bill pretty well with all the hardware, just needing the scope.
