Scout rifles - Budget options

Thinking about some day in the not too far future maybe getting a scout type rifle. The basic deal, a smooth operating bolt action with a long eye relief scope, say 4x or 6x or so, with a 20" or so regular weight barrel, and of course chambered in 308.

I was quite bummed to hear that Remington discontinued their 700 ADL. I was eyeing one up at Gander Mountain, but it was in 243. Gotta have the 308 with cheap surplus ammo, affordable match ammo, and every sort of load there is known to man.

Any ways to get that setup affordably?

Grr, arrgh...

Doubt I'll ever be able to afford such a thing. But I'll look at the pictures...

It really should have at least a 20" barrel though.

What I'd really like is something with a peep site at the rear of the receiver, a blade at the front of the barrel, and a see thru rail at the normal scout position.

This looks great, but is in the wrong caliber for my uses:

The term Scout Rifle comes from Jeff Cooper over at Gunsite at Paulden, Arizona. Jeff has worked on the Scout Rifle concept for about 20 years and there is quite an evolution of what works and what doesnt

This is a compendium of Jeff's work on the Scout Rifle. This may give you some ideas.

NOOOOOO!!!! Let the Mausers be! If it's really crappy and non-collectable, at least do a tasteful sporterization, preferably a non-permanent one.

I pee on those !!!!!!!izations of a historic rifle.

Actually, doesn't look too bad, but I don't trust that mount much, and there aren't any provisions for a rear site.

Darn good budget option though.

Another thing about a Mosin Scout is that the flash from an X54 will be much greater than from an X51. For that reason I'd want a barrel length of at least 22". Would probably throw on a flash hider too if I was drastically sporterizing it.

doesn't savage make a fairly inexpensive scout type rifle? I know spring-field makes a rifle they call a scout but its not inexpensive if I remember correctly.
