22.250 opinions

I'd like to know the opinions of the 22.250.

I am looking for a caliber to shoot prairie dogs and 'yotes on the rez and for extended precision scoped shooting.

I originally toyed with the idea of the .22 HMR and, although it certainly would do the job on the 'dogs', it's a l'il light on the 'yotes' except in close-up and precise shots.

Additionally I need to be able to scope the gun (one reason I don't like "bubba"ing a good mil surp) due to my eyesight and the inability to focus and get a good sight pattern with most open sights.

For those who haven't been around long enough to realize.....I am, primarily, a mil surp collector who would rather NOT !!!!!!!ize a good piece of history.

Although I can hang with with baddest, and my right shoulder kills me after some heavy abuse, I find it takes three-four days for my shoulder to recover from extended shooting of the heavier/heavy calibers.

I've done research on the 22.250 and the ballistics are very, very impressive and components are available for reasonable reloading.

Thoughts?

Experiences?

Thumbs up

An utterly superb round! I had a Ruger M77 (old style) in .22-250 for awhile - unGodly accurate, with good handloads. It'll do the job.

I would use the .223/5.56x45mm. I like the military cartridges and use 5.56x45 and 7.62x51mm rounds more than anything. My friend Bob bought a Savage model 12 varmit rifle in .204 Ruger, the first time I shot it, I placed a five round group at one hundred yards I could cover with a nichol. I was impressed. So I bought the Savage model 10FP-LE2 in .308. Bob's wife started shooting and wanted her own gun, and Bob bought her the Savage model 10 youth in .223. Don't under estimate the .223 cartridge, I've seen it blow a hole through a deer with an exit wound I could put my fist in. Even the .204 has taken down 650 pound buffalo. At nearly 4000 feet per second, the .204 and .223 cause massive wounds in large animals and people because of the energy loss into the tissue. The .22-250 is right up there with the other small calibre, high speed bullets.
At the weekend turkey shoot, 6 out of 7 events for centre fire rifle were won with Savage rifles, the Accutrigger makes the rifle great.
Nothing wrong with the .22-250, I would lean toward the .223, with the right bullet style and weight, it will take down anything in North America, and be cheaper to shoot than .22-250.

I used mine to explode North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming prarie dogs with excellent results. Out to about 250yds which is where my shooting starts to get bad, they explode and bounce 3-4ft in the air. Winchester sells the bulk ammo. The 40gr JHP at 4000fps is amazing. And suprisingly consistant.

I'm firing a Savage fluted heavy barreled gun with the accu-trigger and it is fantastic. Very heavy though, so budget for the gun, a big scope, and a bipod. It doesn't kick much. Less than my AR15. But it is WAY loud. I mean WAY WAY loud.

I use my heavy barrelled Savage 22-250 for Eastern woodchucks and coyotes. It is an inherently accurate round, lots of loads, and weight options. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses.

Y'all pretty much said what I've been thinking and I do believe I might go with the 22.250 platform.

Now the questions is which gun to go with.

Thanks again, y'all, for responding.

I will disagree, I just sold a 22-250. I didn't like the extra muzzle blast of the 22-250 compared to the .223. Of course it is all personal opinion.

As for rifles, check out the heavy barrel Savages and Remington 700's.

Love my Savage Heavy Barreled Varmint with accu-trigger. It was worth every penny.

Great ballistics, better than .223, but ammo is expensive (varmint bullets)

utahvarminter, I intend on reloading.

And, it's the ballistics that sold me on the round........right up there with the ever lasting Swift and .223 doesn't come close in the charts I read.

Even Remington shows great ballistics with their commercial ammo.

The more I read about this lil round the more impressed I am with it.

I'm thinking that, with some experimentation, a person could easily find a hand load, especially for the rifle they have, that would surpass commercial ballistics.

I like Norma products and since they are part of the reloading community, also, I'm sure one could work up one smoking 22.250 round.
