Depends on what you're shooting at. If you're not taking it for serious game, and by that I mean nothing less than moose or bear, you'll hate yourself for getting the 338 over the 300. 300 Win mag is loads cheaper, significantly less recoil, I'm pretty sure flatter shooting, and reloading components are much cheaper if you reload. Also there is far more ammo available, such as match ammo.

If you are planning on hunting large animals, I'd say it's a tough call if you were going black bear or moose. 338 power would be a good thing, but 300 would allow more practice, probably more accurate ammo available, which would both help better shot placement.

If you are going to be facing grizzly bears or hunting in grizzley territory, the 338 is definitely the better choice.

Sounds like a winner to me too. If you have such a stockpile, you no doubt have way more experience than me with the 338, which is all numerical.

Do you also have thousands of rounds of 300 Win Mag available? If you have that much ammo in 338, I would think you'd have a good rifle for it already. Tikka is loved by many but not my cup of tea due to the single stack mag that can only be fed outside of the rifle. I'm a fan of having a mag that can load from the top while in the rifle, detachable or not.

Care to share what you already have in these or bigger rounds?

I'd go with the .338. The .300 is a barrel burner.

If you're doing Alaska, the 375 and 458 are excellent rounds and would really make a difference against the largest predators in the continent and the world. Between the two of them it may be a tough call as the 375 has decent power as well as range, while the 458 has significantly more power with a lower trajectory. But for Alaska the 375 H&H is a big and good step over the 338.
