besides ive already got black and scary looking extremely accurate scoped rifles. | You can always get a "no gunsmithing" mount for the Enfield.
So saying I've got one that I don't use. Tried it on one of my no.5's but still couldn't hit Jack Chit with it! Don't need a scope on the no. 4.

for the average shooter,' me being one of them' I would say rem, win sav.police bolt action are all good the 8mm mauser with a long eye relief scope would work just fine! I'm of the opinion that it's the riflemen that is in need of developing accuracy, not the rifle!

Personally I'd go with something like my Mosin Nagant 91/30. I payed 70 for it in excellent original condition.
A camo stock is about 100 bucks (personally I stick with the natural look)
Mojo microclick ironsight which is 70 bucks
or
A scout mount and scope (i got one for about 110)
less than 300 bucks! Bam! I get groupings of 2 MOA or better at 100 yrds.
with my mojo ironsight i can beat the guys at my local range in the 200 and 300 yd competitions they all use expensive garands.
Just my 2 cents.

Lee-enfield No4 rebarrelled with .308 heavy barrel & decent scope mount; cheap & accurate as hell! Buy a junker with a shot-out barrel, buy a 26-30" barrel blank, get gunsmith to fit & chamber to .308. do the stock yourself or find one of the sporting stocks available. Fit accessories as desired or as they become affordable. Lots of the Old target rifles used in the UK were just this! I still use one now & again (but with target iron sights) and it can still hold 1moa at 600m.

I would have to say that a K31 swiss with a good scope would be the best inexpensive sniper rifle.

Well I beleive that I would go mauser action in 22/250.I have one it could use a new scope I use it for coyotes some times . But I am not really attached to it in my part of the woods a dusey of a shot might be 200 yards . If your interested pm me and we can talk about it . I would sell it for $350 . It is in a custom maple stock with inlays of cherry and walnut i beleive. It has some pitting on the receiver but is still a very solid and accurate rifle.

I would go with a savage bold action larger caliber rifle but thats me. I picked up a used stainless savage 338 win mag with a synthetic stock and a ported barrel. I put a 24 power scope on it and i still only have 400 bucks in it. It will blow a hole alright. I have a friend of mine build my shells and hes makin some pretty hot rounds for it. I like it way more than my 308 rem 7400.

As for an inexpensive rifle with good accuracy I would go with a savage model 110 in 30-06 but the scope will need to be replaced. My scope broke after about 60 rounds the second day I had the rifle. Buying a new scope easily fixed this problem. As others have said it does depend more on the shooters technique that really make or break accuracy. I can easily do a 1/2 inch at 100yrds unsupported with my savage and some might not be able to do less than an 1 1/2 inch at the same distance. There are many other considerations you might want to look in before deciding on a particular rifle. You need to really think how much your going to spend on everything such as rifle, scope, and ammunition. Also take in consideration how many shots your rifle and your shoulder can take repetitively.
This is what I paid
Savage 110 $415
Replacement Pentax Scope $180
Federal Power Shok $12-13 per box of 20 rounds
This is what I use for having a good old time with some friends. As for hunting you can just switch the ammo to better meet your needs.

What makes a sniper rifle what it is?
If I bought a expensive race car and kept it in the garage all its life under a coverlet and posted pictures of it and took it out to a drag strip wearing a NASCAR jumpsuit and went fast once in a great while does that make it a race car? or better yet if I put on sponser stickers and wear a helmit does that make it a NASCAR? and me Mr Petty?

Don't you mean sniper tomato?
| Don't use Hollowpoints on those Tomatos.. it will ruin the meat.. er vegetable.
Either a Remington 700P or a Savage 10FP series are very good.
