Almost any sporter can hit a target the size of a man's torso at 500 yards. Someone mentioned the Savage-a rifle perfectly capable of performing to your specs, but after adding a scope, you'll still go over that $500 budget. A serviceable, 500 yd scope can be had for about $120, but more money will get you a brighter, sharper image, with the difference between cheap and expensive optics more pronounced at high magnification. You also pay more for a tougher scope with a better warranty. It's easy to find a suitible rifle for sniping; the scope will take a little more thinking and searching.

Ahh, now, we might just consider dressing up your Enfield (if it's a No.4 MKI) as a No.4 MKI T.

Mosin Nagant

A Mosin Nagant is still a great option for a cheap rifle capable of accuracy at even 800-1000 yards. It maybe old but is widely available, cheap, and if well trained one can hit an 18 inch target at approximately 1000 yards as demonstrated on youtube. I would recommend a Finnish model as they are typically more accurate and well made. They can run around $300 while the cheaper model Chinese model 53 can be found for around $100. They are a bold action that holds 5 round 7.62x54R. Here is a link to a youtube video of one at 1000 yards.

Sounds like what you want is basically a hunting rifle, a precision bolt rifle with a decent scope on it should do its part, to put the "snipe" in it you have to do yours, which will take practice, whatever the rifle is.

I agree with the folks ywho recommend a good used rifle that you can add camo to. this will be the best way to get a good rifle on your budget. maybe you can find one that already has decent optics on it, maybe not. but either way, buying a used rifle will give you the ability to spend some on a decent scope.

And yes, a mosin nagant sniper, even replica could be a good bet, but i dont think its what your looking for.

a fake mosin sniper with a good bore will do great. its fake so they are cheap and the optics are new. toy around with different ammo to find what it likes

My suggestion would be to check in your AO for a Marlin bolt action .308Win and get get something like a Burris Fulfield II in 3x-9x with a ballistic plex reticle.

When I have time I'll add why.

1. Growing reputation for being accurate; check out the Marlin sub forum here.

2. Available with a synthetic stock; extra weather resistance.

3. Standard adjustable trigger.

4. Reasonable price; +/-$300 brand new.

5. Off the shelf match grade ammo for those who do not reload.

6. Burris FF II Scope 3-9x:

A.) Good magnification range.

B.) Ballistic Plex is a basic range finiding reticle. Pick th eload your rifle likes lean the drop aand practice until it beocomes automatic.

C.) Simple and fairly robust design/construction for the money around $200 if you bargin hunt.

Nothing fancey or sexy but it should get the job done if you do your part.

There have been good suggestions as to rifles for your op. Do YOU have the time and patents(sp) to put into this project. Have you choosen(sp)
a spotter or are YOU going to go it alone, if so stop watching tv and
movies.
Sniping can be very effective when done correctly.
I would suggest books written by Viet Nam snipers.

I completely agree, the Marlin XS-7 in .308 is the least expensive platform with an extremely high degree of precision built in. The thing shoots as well or better than anything under $2500, and better than some stuff OVER $2500. I'm still amazed they managed to retail it at $300, when it could easily be a $500+ rifle...

Not to mention it's also Pillar-bedded & Recoil Padded at the factory, along with the adjustable trigger.

Although I'm old-fashioned...I prefer the XL-7 in .30-06
