calico

I am looking at buying a rifle that will have a large magazine. The calico looks like it is the best bet. I am not worried about full auto. Looking for self defense of my property, since i live out in the country. People have also mentioned the sks and the ak?

Welcome to Gunandgame! Your firearm needs seem to ge a general home/homeland defense nature, for which many, many, many firearms would be suitable. The Calico is a bit of a rare/specialty gun due to its low quantities and unusual features. I would not say it's the "very best" in any way, but it is unique.

I think it's a 100rd helical mag that it uses. If it's simply extreme capacity that you're looking for, AK drum mags in 7.62x39mm can be found in 75rd and in rare cases 100rd capacities. (Note that a 100rd AK drum is probably more common than a Calico mag.)

Now I used the term extreme capacity for a reason. Even in a war most soldiers use standard sized (20-40rd) box magazines. While I must admit that an AK with drum is surprisingly manageable, a drum magazine is mainly practical for sustained fire against an enemy force. More on the "homeland defense" side than home defense. Even so, the "extreme capacity" magazines are most realistically useful for recreational shooting of inanimate objects, particularly defunct pieces of technology. If you want to defend your home against criminals and dangerous animals a number of choices ranging from a 12ga pump shotgun to a revolver to a semi-auto pistol to a semi-auto rifle would be good.

Without going into any more detail, it would be helpful to know where you're coming from, ie what your past firearm experience is. That would help us help you know what's a good choice.

I would say that you shouldn't need 50 or 100 rounds for home defense. If you can't hit what yer aiming at with 20 shots or less, I would say it would be better to run. Maybe your situation is different. Like Battlerifle said, tell us more.

Anyways, calico's used to be produced here in my hometown of Bakersfield, CA. I know someone that has a 100 round .22LR rifle. Pretty cool, but a @#$@^#$^ to load.
