NEF Handi Rifle .223

I am in the search for a .223 to have some fun at the target range. I dont want to spend alot of money but i want a fair gun to have some fun with. I was looking at the NEF handi rifle .223 (SB2-223). I was wondering if anyone had any idea of what the price might be on one of them. Also i notice in the specs it says "Scope mount rail and hammer extension; no iron sights." However, in the picture it doesnt look like it has any of the above mentioned. Last question but definatly not the least important, am i better off buying a gun like this for a good gun shop or are there better deals to be found at dicks or wamart for a better gun at a similar price? Once again, just looking for something to take to the range, if i keep taking the 22-250 i will be broke in no time and the 30-06 is a bit over kill so im looking for a cheeper gun that will eventually pay for its self in the long run with what i save on ammunition. I just dont want to spend alot since i dont shoot quit enough to justify a gun over $300.

Nef

You can see all the options of sights at:
www.hr1871.com
I switched the stock on my NEF 30-06 for a Choate. The forearm has what I believe is called an Anschultz style rail for accessories. I attached a Harris bipod to it.
I'm just about ready to switch back to the original stock though since the gun had such a nice small carbine feel with original stock.
It is one of the few guns I bought used. Cost was under $200.00
Certainly GunBroker.com would have one sooner or later in .223
They're running advertisement top of our screen now I noticed.
This would be an excellent gun for you due to the fact for under $100.00 they will headspace a brand new barrel, different caliber for you. I'm leaning for the .22 Hornet barrel on mine. You can add lots of calibers over the years and save tons of money. A single shot is alot of fun I think.

Unfortunately not - Remington Arms has bought the import rights and have driven up the prices. We used to get them from EAA - European American Armory.

if the .22-250 is expensive to shoot, you might look into taking up reloading. then you can do alot more shooting for the same $$$$.

When I was looking for a small rifle I could put in my backpack when I go camping, I looked into those Handi-Rifles. They seem pretty solid for what they are. I have a bolt-action Savage at the moment, in 7 Mag. I don't shoot it all that often as my old man's uses it the most, but when I have, it grouped real nice. I love the bolt on it, its one of the smoothest I've felt, with the "little swirly marks" (I forgot what its called). If Savage builds their .223's anything like they built my 7 Mag, I'd recommend one.

NEF/H&R Handi rifles are excellent buys in my opinion, and can be made into awesome shooters. I have 2, 223 single shots 1-standard contour and 1-"Ultra" Model with a 24" bull barrel. Both shoot incredible. With me doing all my part, I can get groups from smallest 1/4 clover leafs through 3/4...A consistant MOA gun with every caliber I have in an Handi rifle, except my 44Mag barrel. Still working with that one. The 204 barrels can really be inpressive. As with all rifles ya just have to find what they like and dislike.
Walmarts prices are usually around $200 for the Handi rifle- $275 for the "Ultra" models, depending on what you want. Synthetic stocks, and nice Laminated ones can be had as well. And all stocks are interchangable, so thats a nice touch.
H&R at MidwayUSA
All models that do not have open sights will include mounts and a hammer spur. As of this time the only models that have sights are 22Hornet, 30-30, 44Mag, and 45-70. All can be purchased through the barrel program and can be fitted to SB-2 centerfire rifle receivers.:

Rossi has a similar gun as well. I see the matched pairs on sale pretty cheap at Academy pretty often.

I was in the midst of this dilema about 6 mo ago. Ended up with a Stevens (Savage) model 200 in 223 less than $400 out the door with a 6x18 scope and more rifle for the money. I need to sit down and do some loading and seriously wring it out.

My Dad and I almost bought the Steven's model. We liked it a whole lot when we held it, and it seemed like a solid rifle, but we went with the Savage 111 in 7 Mag.

a savage is a very good rifle so dont be afraid of them due to the low price, they are actually one of the most accurate also.
