| opinion or advice on new rifle purchase Hi everyone, I'm new here and I really need some descent info about purchasing a new hunting rifle. 1st I'm the type of hunter that likes to walk my territory trough brush or swamps mind you I live in Gaspe Qc. ca my game is limited to moose whitetaile and bear. I have alot of friends telling me to get a 710 remington 30-06 or 300 mag. but my type of hunting tells me that my other gem is my better choice. 450 marlin 1895m fitted with a red dot scope cause I wear glasses and like something with fast target acquisition. so what do you think does my prefference make sence. tonyrox ![]() |

| If you are happy with it. If you can shoot it, it will do everything you want in a lite walking around rifle. |

| Mr. Fixit ![]() | This would be my personal choice for your type of hunting. I suggest it mostly because the ammo is more readily available than the .450 Marlin. This could be a major factor in your location. Marlin 1895G Guide Gun 45-70

| I second the Marlin guidegun in 45-70. I have one and it is a short light handy rifle with lots of horsepower. I have mine equiped with a 1-4.5x scope backed up with a lyman 66 reciever sight. I have thought about putting a red dot on mine but havn't yet, let me know how it works out if you go that route.

| a .444 marlin would also be a good choice. I would never spend money on a remington 710. It really depends how much you feel like spending. A remington model 7 would also be a decent choice. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | With the game array of moose, whitetail, and bear, a 30-06 or 300 Win Mag sound like excellent choices. 450 Marlin is a good round for less than long ranges, but my experience has taught me to be prepared for a variety of ranges with a reasonably trajectoried moderately powerful round.

| I love my 450. I use it for everthing, with no scope. Possibly my favorite rifle. Have you tried the Hornady Leverevolution ammo its also great and a few bucks cheaper per box at SIR in Winnipeg. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | After having to shoot a Moose multiple times with a 30/06 to get it to stay down, I went to a Model 70 Winchester in .300 win mag, and I have been very happy with one shot kills on Moose, Bear and caribou ever since. I have some short shots(< 50 yds) and some Long (200-400 yd) shots here in Alaska to take so this cartridge has been a real blessing for me, recoil is mild, I can shoot 180 grains for long range or 220 grains for close in big Grizzly Bears, or 150 grain for 400+ yard shots at Dall Sheep, and I dont destroy a lot of meat. .444 or 45/70 is Ok for short range work, but sucks for that trophy buck out at 200 yards or more. | Super Moderator ![]() | I like the 300 mags not for any added power but for the flatter trajectory. Estimating range isn't always easy, so even if you have perfect aim you have to consider a margin for error in calculating bullet drop. So whether I'd go with a 300 Win Mag or 30-06 depends on what type of bullet and how close I would plan to be before shooting.

| tonyrox, it would be worth your while to look into the new marlin xlr. it's a lever with laminated stock and stainless barrel and action. I have 2 1895 ss in 444 and 45-70. I reload so I really like the 444 much better. here is the site: Marlin Firearms: New! XLR Series they also have the ballard barrel so you can use heavy bullets. just the medicine for your type of game. i don't think you would go wrong with either the 444, 45-70, or the 450. |
