The reason for the exclusion of the M1 carbine is simple- it was not meant as an assault/main rifle. It was intended strictly as a defensive weapon to replace the 1911.

Styer AUG? Nothing more than a toy rifle. Down here they are known as Tupperware Rifles due to being made of plastic. Nothing but a POS. Give me the old SLR that the australian army used so sucessfully in Vietnam

well the M1 Carbine wasnt exactly used to replace the 1911 if I remember correctly all it was was shortened M1 Garand developed for close quarters fighting that was goin on in europe I could be very wrong so dont quote me but I dont think it was built to replace the 1911

Let's split the difference, tbone, and say it was developed as a weapon smaller than the Garand so as to be less cumbersome for artillery, cooks, medics, and mechanized personnel but give them something with more range and firepower than the pistol.....

Personally, if they were all laid out on a table and I could pick one to have for my very own, I'd walk away with the M14. JMO.
