? about barrel length

I have a few ? about barrel length.

1. how is it measured
2. what is the minimum lenght for barrel and rifle overall

1. Barrel length is simply the length of the barrel
2. The minimum legal length for a rifle barrel is, I believe, 16.5", that would equal 38.5" for the overall rifle

I always thought it was measured by how far down a rod went in the barrel with bolt closed.

Actually 16.1 inches is Legal Barrel length for a rifle, so if measured by BATFE there is no "Right on the line 16 inch Measurement" Which can be Questioned !
18.1 inches for a shotgun!

barrel length is measured from the breech face to the muzzle.
