I think it should be the .30-40 Krag. It was the first smokeless round adopted by the US military. From that, you got the .30-03, and then the .30-06. The .30-06 then led to the 7.62X51 NATO round.

.30-06 started it all IMO but as technology grows, so does the bullets and the .308 and .300 WM surpasses it. i've read that in competitions the .308 out shoots the .30-06. to me though anyone who is into guns should own one to understand what our veterans went through in WWII. my opinion though

Most Influential?... 9x19mm. Why? Because that's what most of your hoodlums and gangbangers used to commit the crimes that got us the gun control we have today.

Now, most influential on a military and hunting (e.g. LEGAL basis), I'd have to say I'm 50/50 split on .30-06 and 7.62x51NATO.

I would have to go with the 30-06, or maybe even the 30-30. It is America, we are supposed to love 30 cals!

Sure as heck wasn`t a WSSM... Mauser bolt action isn`t strictly a cartridge, to be just a tad picky.

I'd say 30-06. If it wasn't for that one, we'd be speaking German right now. How much more influential can you get?

30-06 can we say Springfield 03 and M1 two of the best battlefield rifles
the U.S Army ever had! The enfield was excellent also.

7.62x39 for the second half of the century, because of how widely it is used.
