Classic Arms Inc.

These guys actually import them, but their prices are higher: Arms of America, LLC: Firearms

Extremely reputable. Many a folk online have reported good service with them and if you check out The Box O' Truth, he purchases some of his surplus/ C&R rifles from Classic Arms. As with any firearm, you'll need an FFL transfer, unless you have an FFL03 (C&R license) and it's a C&R firearm (for more on that do a search for C&R FFL on our boards). Accessories and ammo do not require an FFL and can be delivered directly to your door via the "Big Brown Truck Of Happiness", as Ol' Painless (O_P) calls the UPS Truck on TBoT.

Two he bought from Classic Arms:
Educational Zone #27 - Great Firearms - The Mosin Nagant - Page 1
Educational Zone #33 - Refinishing a 24/47 Mauser - Page 1

I should mention that I have not personally had any dealings with Classic Arms, but intend on purchasing from them in the near future.

one of these puppies in .223 looks like a good deal. AK reliability and compatibility with the ammo I already have....will it handle 5.56x45 as well? Or is it for commercial .223 only?

It will take 5.56 as well. The 223 designation is to allow it to be imported as a sporting rifle.

Ahhhh I see. I noticed there is a conversion out there that allows you to use AR15 magazines as well

Maybe. It's not that clear. If I did a conversion it would be more drastic but more sure to work as well.
