22-250,223 or 220 swift?

I have bee on the verge of buying a new varmit rifle for some time now. The 22-250 looks like a good long range cartridge for gophers, and coyote. The 220 swift is more expensive for cartridges and is harder on barrles? 223 might not be enough power to reach out to long ranges.

I agree the 223 is a bit weak for the real long range hit... the 22-250 would be my best guess.. Also look into the 6.5x55MM swed in the 90 grain boat tail carrys a bit more hit out at 1000 yards then the 22-250... nice flat shooter, but hand load only hard to find boxed standard load is a 139 grain at 2800 FPS

I would go with the 220 Swift, it is one of my favorite varmint cartridges.

depends on what you consider long range. none of 'em are worth a dang at 1000+yds. inside of 750 the 22-250 or 220swift are okay, and keep the .223 inside of 500yds.

With a 1in14 twist there is virtually no difference in barrel life in .22-250 and .220Swift.Using 40gr bullets there is about 3"difference in drop between .22-250 and .223 at 400yds with the .204 surpassing the .223 and almost equaling the .22-250.The .223 is the easiest and most economical for ammo. samuel.

Is the 6.5x55 really that good out at the 1000 yard mark? I never considered it as a good varmiting/long range round.

the 6.5x55 will get out to 1000yds accurately, but your scope had better have a lot of adjustment built in it. the 6.5x284 is a better choice.

I defiantly like the 220 Swift but with ammo and brass being a premium setback, I'd go with the 22-250 as a #2nd choice.

I'e never heard of the 65x284. Is it very rare? What are the bullet weights?

The 6.5x284 was a wildcat round now becoming popular as a 1000yd bench-rest and sniper use.I guess soon to become a commercial loading?

I have used the 6.5x55 in the 139 (2800FPS) grain to take down Coyote at 800 yards... 1 round two ears and a tail.. Nice flat shooter. The 6.5MM (.264) is out in a wide range of weight.

Barnes makes 100 to 140 grain... Sierra makes a Hot 85 grain Hollow point and up to a 155 grain.... now Hornady makes a real sweet 95 grain Vmax and a 100 grain soft point all the way up to a huge brute that tips the scales at a massive 160 grain round nose. From deer to wood chucks and coyote and them nasty little rat dogs of the praire... take a look at the ballistics on the round, take a look at the history of the round... this thing can be made to really be your all around rifle.
Sensible Rifle Cartridges
6.5x55 Swedish for Sniping
Reloading
Scroll down on this last page and you will see what you can get out of this rifle. The 6.5MM is over looked here in the US, but will do just about anything you can ask of the round. Flame suit is on...LOL

Joe you mean the 264 RLB?

Anyway the 6.5 swed is a nice flat shooter and will get the job done. Barnes makes 100 to 140 grain bullets for this casing, Sierra makes a hot 85 grain HP all the way up to a 155 grain... Hornady makes a 95 grain Vmax 100 grain soft point and then all the way up to a 160 grain monster.

Reloading has some reload data on this round if you want to see some data. Take that Sierra 85 grain load it up with some Norma 202 and you can get a real hot 1041 M/S out of this rifle. With a `140 grain Fed I read someplace that at 1000 yards you can see 500 ft pounds of impact... this round has been overlooked for too long by the hunters of the USA... take a look and see what you think....The Flame suit is now on

What is the best twist rate for this rifle? Which manufacturer is the best for the 6.5X55?

Twist for the Carl Gustav Match grade is 1 in 8.6inch... check out the CG63 match rifle by sarco... about $500 for the match grade rifle 29 inch barrel made in the country that best understands this round... Just something to think about.
