I have the .308. Love it a lot, probably cause it was the first rifle I ever hunted and killed a buck with. Groetnis Bossie Quote:

sorry joelee, but the best mauser on the face of this earth will not compete accuracy wise, or come remotely close on lock time . there is a reason a mauser hasnt won anything in 40+years in the benchrest world. fine rifles, but not all that when it comes to precision shooting.

What is your thoughts, is it worth it or not to customize, I wanted to put a serious scope on it with bipod and synthetic stock for some serious playing out to about 400 yards. What kind off accuracy can I expect at 100 yards with match grade ammo?

| Wow,That's a hard nut to crack with a sight unseen rifle.Match ammo is only one key for many door's in order to achieve accuracy.Just mount a good scope and mounts, bag shoot it and see how it prints. If you like what you see go from there. You can deplete a bank account building an accurate rifle. Many fine rifles can out shoot the owner,a fact I must admit to at the age I am now,but as a general rule that is true.

.308 is one of the best calibres to have in S. Africa. Can take pretty much anything that us mere mortals can afoord to shoot. Wouldn't take on Rhino and such though Should do a number on the monster warthogs up in the Marble Hall area! Groete Maarten | |

I have to agree with LeftyO and Samuel. While the Mauser action is a reliable workhorse of an action, it's not exactly ideal now a days to build a bench rest rifle on. However if your Mauser is chambered in 308 and in good shape, and you are wanting to shoot out to 400yards I say Drill and Tap it and see how she does. Even if you get 1" to 1-1/2" groups you will have a ton of fun. Depends on what level of accuracy you are looking for. And you mentioned playing so..... 400 yards for a 308 isn't hard. |

joelee, it got started because you equated the mauser as being the equal to the best built rifles, including locktime. even if you take the BR thing out of it, the mauser 98 is not comparable to a good modern rifle in terms of accuracy, or lock time. they are fine rifles, capable of excellent accuracy. i happen to have an 1896 swede mauser thats been massaged and is occasionally capable of producing 1/4" groups, but that in no way shape or form puts it on par with a well built modern rifle. concerning locktime, the 98's time is measured in hundreths of a second, while modern rifles ie. 700rem, mod10 savage are measured in miliseconds, with the old remington 788 being the fastest of them all.
