1st Post

Hello to all! Bear with me. I'm new at all this stuff. I was used to a different forum that was a whole lot less complicated than this one. No tags, no icons, no nothing. With that being said, here goes. I have a Ruger MKII in a .300 Win. Mag. that I'm wanting to do some work on. I want to replace the 24 inch barrel with a 26 inch. I've been looking at the various barrel makers and was wondering if anyone could suggest one based on experience. I also want to replace the recoil pad and replace the creepy trigger............I'm not very computer savvy and can't type all that fast. I might not even be on the right forum for these questions. There seems to be a forum on everything, on this site! Wow! Please be patient with me.

shilen, douglas, lilja, hart, krieger, pac-nor all make excellent barrels. the most important thing to do is to find a GOOD gunsmith. the best barrel in the world is junk if it is not properly installed.

Welcome aboard Bob! I would suggest that you get catalogs from Brownells and Midway. They are the two top sources for gunsmithing supplies in the U.S. To address your questions, I would suggest a Shilen barrel but there are a lot of other good ones as well. Sims Laboratories makes really good pads as does Pachmayr. Here are a couple of links:
Brownells - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories, Gun Parts and Gunsmithing Tools
MidwayUSA - Shooting Supplies, Reloading, Gun Parts, Ammunition, Rifle Scopes & Airguns

Thanks for the info., Toolman. I'm kind of new when it comes to buying rifles and replacing them piece by piece. I might as well have a "Custom" built, huh? Thanks again.

You would have been better off building a custom rifle from scratch, IMHO.

Well so am I brother! It's hard to find adequate weaponry, but I consider it, well......... just another challenge. Maybe we can share wisdom on what's out there. I try to keep up with it. I'm sure you do too. Thanks.

Hey, I agree with that, there isn't anything funner then tinkering with guns. If you need anything, just give me a holler.

Thanks Midas. I just may have to. I'm a southpaw and rifle availability is limited for me. I have some rifles and calibers that I want to build or have custom built. Actions are a main concern. I'm a bolt lover and I like 24 inch barrels, 26 inch on mags.

A custom rifle is a very personal thing, thats what makes them so special. Personally, I like a 24 inch barrel on the standard length magnums, a 22 inch barrel on standard cals, and a 26 inch barrel on the Weatherby Magnums.

Thinking is not my fortee, or at least that's what my wife says. Anyway, I'm looking forward to wisdom sharing with you. Feel free to send me a message. I'm not making any guarentees I'll find it, wading through this massive site, but I'll give it a try. Thanks again.

Hey Midas, I answered your thread, but apparently it got lost in Cyberspace! I hope the Webmaster didn't delete it. It was probably a snafoo on my part(are we allowed to say snafoo or ist das Vorbotten) Anyway, thanks for the chat. Have a good evening. I have to get up early. Maybe we can discuss my other weapons tomorrow.

You have a nice evening, as well. You should stop by the chat sometime, I'm usually in there, we can discuss your firearms in detail.

as you know selection of left handed rifles is very poor. i only have 1 LH rifle for just that reason. caliber selection is abismall, as is selection of available models. so unless you just happen to want one of the plain jane LH rifles that are available, build what you want its just about the only way to get what you want.

Another consideration is rifle weight. I'm wanting a .338 Winchester Mag. and/or a .375 H&H. All that I can find are rifles that weigh around 7 lbs. or less! The manufactures are doing very little to promote this hobby. Maybe that is why the "Custom" guys have got a long waiting period, huh?

manufacturers dont give a rip about their left handed customers because we are only approx 15% of their market. you can always add weight to the stock to make a rifle heavier.

I have no problem with a lightweight .338 Win Mag, or .375 H&H, recoil is just an order of business with those cartridges.
