Building A New Rifle

I need some input on actions. I'm wanting to build a couple of rifles. I'm a southpaw so rifle availability is an issue. I want to build two bolt actions. I want one chambered for the Rem. .260 and the other chambered for the .338 Winmag. Should I consider a barreled action from Montana rifles? Should I buy the barrel and action separate? What other actions are available for south-paws? I need some good input. Thanks.

savage is an option, dakota also produces LH actions. it depends on your budget, and how much of the project you desire to do yourself. savage's are do it yourself friendly.

Hey Lefty, I would like a 26 inch barrel on the .338 Winmag. and a 24 inch on the .260 Rem. Does Savage utilize a decent recoil pad or is it trash?

savages pads are a little hard. i fitted a pachmayr XLT magnum pad to mine- 100% better. most factory rifles have hard pads, although some manufacturers are starting to wise up.

Go with Montana barreled actions but inquire what your stock options are, or who sells stocks for there barrel contours.
Plan to wait along time to get the barreled action.

Bro. Bob I highly recomend the new Ruger Hawkeye series boltaction rifle check them out.
The one I bought is flawless...A.H

I am not sure if Howa makes barreled action or not, but they are pretty solid products if they do. And unless you are target shooting with your 338, I wouldnt worry too much about putting a 24 inch barrel on it.

Howa does make barreled actions. As for the 26" barrel on the .338 Win Mag, it really isn't necessary, as the standard length magnums, like the 7mm Rem mag, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag, can efficiently burn all of their powder in a 24" barrel.

Let's split the difference. A 25 inch barrel.

Why do you need a longer barrel? If your hunting, every inch takes it's toll. Trust me, I hunted up around Montrose, Colorado with a 28 inch .300 Win Mag. HORRIBLE. Hit every friggen tree I came across. Eventually had to hold it in my hands, and that's no fun when it snowed that night.

Ok, Ok,..........You've talked me into it! 24 inches it is!.........28 inches! Was that a Weatherby? If not, it had to be a custom.

Weatherby Magnums come standard with 26 inch barrel's in the Mark V, and rightfully so. And a 28 inch barrel on a 300 mag is rediculious.

Rule of thumb with barrel lengths: The wider the bore, the less difference barrel length makes. The closer the case diameter is to the bore, the less difference barrel length makes. The longer the barrel, the less difference each inch makes. The longer the barrel, the less noise it makes, and due to weight, sometimes lower recoil too.

if you have the $$$ a Dakota M10 is uneal. a 26 to 28 inch barrel really balance the rifle. I have 1 in 7rum w/28" barrel. WHAT a gun and its just as good for lefties. You should go on to gunbroker or ga and find cheap M70's and M700. Send them to Hill Country rifle in Texas ask for Matt or sen an action to Lexx @ Rifles Inc. The will be able to dance when it comes home.
