Looking to start rifle target shooting

Hey everyone
I found this forum searching on the internet, whilst looking for a firearm forum. I used to shoot .22 rim fire and .308 center fire rifles, both bolt action.

I stopped because of school, now I'm finished school and want to get back into it. I live in Sydney, Australia. There is a .22/air rifle (50 M) range and a .308 range (around 600 M - 800 M) near my house.

My question is which is better to learn with, .22 or .308 and what is a relatively cheap rifle for that caliber? I'm looking for a rifle that is cheap, reliable, bolt action, mag clip of 5 or under and can have after market items on it to improve accuracy and that type of thing.

I'm kind of new to firearms and i don't know all the terminology, but I'm willing to learn.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, also for varmint hunting

I would start back with the .22 and then the .308. The CZ 452 is a good .22 bolt action rifle. Remington makes a relatively inexpensive .308 bull barrel.

Good Luck

sure!
but i would cut to the chase and get a good .22 l.r.
the cz 452 is a wonderful rifle.
it's the best deal around i think.

savage makes a good .308 .
the 10-fp it's got a heavy barrel and is inexpensive.

Thanks, i think i will get a .22. Is there a decent rifle for around 250-400 USD that is a bolt action .22?

you bet!
the cz452!
can you tell i have been impressed with these firearms?
i have never heard anybody say anything bad about these things.

i paid $370 for my heavy bbl. 452 varmint and have gotten the smallest 5 shot group i have ever gotten out of any firearm.

0.042 @ 25 yds.

Thank you Billy, you have been a great help. In the next week or so i plan on visiting a firearm shop to see what they have. I am looking at the CZ 452, it looks very nice.

EDIT: Nice shooting by the way!

I agree with Billy, get a .22lr first. As to terminology.its all four letter words for me but altho I have a lot of them I better not print them on here. You will probably come up with your own anyway out on the range.Thats where I learned most of mine.Shooting my own reloads. sam.
