Trying to decide on a plinking rifle

I'm looking into buying a cheap plinking rifle, due to the high cost of ammunition for my other guns. I've never purchased a .22 and have little experience with them. I've found the Savage Model 64G at a pretty good price of 150 dollars and am wondering if anyone has had experience with this rifle. Also any other rifle under 200 dollars. Any suggestions? Thanks

Another fun plinking .22 rifle is the Henry. It's easy to use and inexpensive.

You will experience a new thrill in .22,s if you ever work the lever on that Henry Oxford is talking about.I believe we are all lever lovers and like to drop back to the old days when levers ruled.At any rate they are a delight to shoot. sam.

This is an affordable gun with a longer barrel, longer sighting radius, and therefore a really good buy somewhere between a target grade rifle and the lesser quality .22's.

I'd say the Remington 597 or Ruger 10/22. I've heard very good things about the Ruger, and can personally say that the Remington is my current favorite firearm, and this is over a lot of very expensive firearms.

Another inexpensive 22 rifle would be one of the Mossbergs so go to there site and look at them and if you have a Wal Mart that sells guns you can buy the savages and mossbergs under 90 bucks I think.
If your not in a hurry they have a special order catolog for guns with many you want find at there web site.
Oxford mentioned a Henry, the blued finish ones sell for around $129.00 at Wal Mart.
Personaly I want a 2007 model Marlin tube fed boltaction with synthectic stock to match my 22 magnum.
In 2007 Marlin changed the stocks on there bolt action 22's that are more man size and look excellent so check these out.
I can get one through an ffl holder for a little more than $150.
You want have any trouble finding a nice 22 in your price range.
Let us know what you get feller and pictures and report would be nice too...A.H

The Savage Mark II's are very good shooters for the price and they come with the Accu-trigger.

I have stainless Ruger 10/22 with a silver Simmons 4x scope and a Henry Golden Boy lever...both great rifles.

i have a Henry lever action and love the thing. it is dead on, no need for a scope JMO

Whatever you do get this one tip is very important.

Keep testing different ammo in it. Sooner or later your going to find the perfect round for it. It's what reloaders do except you don't have to spend all the money on reloading equip what with .22 ammo being so cheap.

It might be Federal, it might be Winchester, or it might be Thunderbolts but you will see the difference as you experiment.

Ruger 10/22. I bought one to shoot more often ILO my .270 and just love it. I have begun to customize with the parts available everywhere. I took a buddy to the range and he enjoyed the 10/22 more than his 30-30.

I've had a Remmington 514 model for 51 years now still shoots accurate as an arrow.
