| Here in B.C. (mostly on Vancouver and Queen Charlotte islands) we have the largest black bear populations in North America and yes the .308 (and 7-08) are very effective. Check this out Jim Shockey - Vancouver Island Black Bear not about calibers but when it comes to black bear hunting we are lucky as hell here. Never mind the gun just do what this guy did.. | The .308 with 180s will be great on blackies. I have killed them in NY with .490" roundballs before.

| Senior Member | Well since my trip will be delayed about a year I have some more range time. I still think it will be the .308 but now I have time to develop some killer loads. (actually just an excuse to go to the range more). |

| "Cougar and black bear (CXP2) In North America we have two potentially dangerous predators the size of those just discussed, yet they are normally shy and innocuous. I am referring to the cougar, a cat about the size of an African leopard, and the black bear. Adult male black bear may average 300 pounds, but can grow to 500+ pounds in exceptional cases. In parts of North America cougar and black bear populations are expanding and, due to restrictions on hunting, they are losing their fear of man. Dangerous cougar and black bear encounters in the U.S. are on the rise. Black bear and cougar are routinely taken in North America with rifles in the "deer rifle" category. Adequate medicine for either of these predators includes all of the cartridges judged adequate for leopard, plus the 6.5x55, 6.5x57, .260 Rem., 6.5mm Rem. Mag., 6.5x68, .264 Win. Mag., 7x57, 7mm-08 Rem., 7x64, .280 Rem., 7.5mm Swiss, .30-30 Win., .30-40, 7.65x53, .300 Sav., .308 Marlin, .303 British, 7.62x54R, .32 Win. Spec., .35 Rem., .356 Win. and .375 Win. A handy rifle such as a Kimber Classic 84M with a 2-7x scope in .308 Win. or .338 Federal would be an appropriate choice for hunting cougar and black bear." Quoting Chuck hawks from MATCHING THE GUN TO THE GAME I have posted this link in other forums thought it may be appropriate here as well. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | well....In 1984 we had a photographer come here to Alaska and he came in the Bar one afternoon, asking what the best way to get close up photos of Bears in the Area was. We all told him to put bacon grease on and walk out in the woods about 15 miles out of town, and he would get all the photos he wanted...We were kidding him, but I guess he thought we were serious... They Found his car and his tennis shoes a few weeks later...never did find him. ![]() Rich

| I grew up and have lived in michigan all my life till recently. I have guided bear hunters and have killed them there for years. With watching over 50 bears being killed, and killing 8 myself, I have found that they die pretty easily. I am not saying they are not tough, it's just that they are not as high-strung as a prey animal. They are the top predator, and fear very little, so they react totally different. A bear dies just as quick as a deer, with the same shot, and they usually travel a lot less after the shot. I guided a young hunter to his first bear and all he had was a .243 and I had watched him shoot that gun, and that young man could shoot, and held his composure real well. The second evening on stand I watched him shoot that bear like he would a deer and it traveled less than 30 yards and expired. Now having said this, I was a little skeptical about the cartridge at his age and experience, but it worked great. the bear dressed at 437 pounds, putting it well over 500 pounds live. In Michigan all bears have to be registered with the D.N.R and they want to know weight and all the statistics about the animal. I would myself be very confident with any caliber rifle that I can kill a deer with. Your shot at a Michigan bear will be close, and where they live you will not have even a 100 yard shot, so any gun you choose will do the job just fine if it is something you could shoot a deer with. hope this helps. Good luck, and let me know where you are headed, and maybe I can give you a little pointer, as I have hunted all over the state. Both the upper and lower peninsulas have great bear hunting. Been there: done that! |

| Senior Member | I am going to copper harbor. my brother in law has hunted up there for years and comes home with a nice blackie every time. He uses a 300 win mag, and was the one that told me a .308 might not be enough. So like any guy discussion about caliber I call BS and tell him I am definately bringing the .308 now. Anyway If you know anything about the area I would love some pointers. |

| I agree with killer . I am not a fan of the ballistic tips they seem to make a splash at close range. But the Partition is just as good at 600 yards as it is at 10. Even though blacks are not as heavy skinned and boned as Grizzly a shoulder will splash a ballistic tip rendering it useless and put you fleet of foot. |

| copper harbor is just north of where I used to guide. We have treed tons of bears in that area and have seen some huge bears up there. My second biggest bear that I have shot was right between there and the little town of L'anse. great country to hunt. Pretty thick for the most part, and some great people as well. My buddy (jerry) killed a 440 pounderf up there last year, and they treed 8 bears in one weekend between the group. Great area, and Rest assured: have faith in your gun, and enjoy the hunt. If you happen to be in central michigan in your travels and stop at Jays Sporting Goods, tell my former Co-Workers, that Jim says howdy. I worked in the archery department and the gun department. Enjoy your hunt and if there is anything else I might be able to help you with; feel free to ask. take care man... ![]() |

| Samuel is right, the Remington "Swift Scirocco" and Hornadys "sst" are examples of polymer tipped bullets that claim to have great penetration, I use the latter and have had it break bone and still leave a great exit wound.
