shooting birdshot in rifled barrel

a friend asked me if you shoot birdshot or 00 buckshot in a rifled slug barrel will it hurt the rifling? i don't know ,i told him that as far as i can tell it hasn't hurt mine, but i knew the right place to go for an answer.

As long as you use lead shot and it's not done on a regular basis, you won't do any real damage other thal leading the heck out of the barrel. I wouldn't recommend it in some older .22 rifles as the barrels are sometimes made of lower-grade steel than center-fires.

A rifled slug Shotgun Barrel will spin the shot into a wide dispersal pattern...Not a good Idea...

No, but do not aim for the target

birdshot or buckshot in a rifled barrel will not hurt the riflings. what will happen is a whopping centrifugal force that will make the pattern start out like a doughnut with an ever expanding central hole. so, it is not a good idea unless you are sticking the end of the barrel into an intruder's clothing.

I'm thinking the plastic shotcup will protect the rifling from damage, but the pattern would be ugly . . .
