| Senior Member | shooting birdshot in rifled barrel a friend asked me if you shoot birdshot or 00 buckshot in a rifled slug barrel will it hurt the rifling? i don't know ,i told him that as far as i can tell it hasn't hurt mine, but i knew the right place to go for an answer.

| Mr. Fixit ![]() | As long as you use lead shot and it's not done on a regular basis, you won't do any real damage other thal leading the heck out of the barrel. I wouldn't recommend it in some older .22 rifles as the barrels are sometimes made of lower-grade steel than center-fires.

| No, but do not aim for the target birdshot or buckshot in a rifled barrel will not hurt the riflings. what will happen is a whopping centrifugal force that will make the pattern start out like a doughnut with an ever expanding central hole. so, it is not a good idea unless you are sticking the end of the barrel into an intruder's clothing. |

| I'm thinking the plastic shotcup will protect the rifling from damage, but the pattern would be ugly . . . ![]()
