Buying a Hi Point Carbine Tomorrow...

I was going to buy a new pistol, then I thought well, maybe I should buy a rifle as I'm pretty much pistol'd up right now. Thought about a Marlin 22, but then I thought how about a High Point? I found one in my area for $169, and figured another $60 for the stock replacement as I find the carbine to be the absolute truth in ugliness.

Anyway, here's my issue, and it has nothing to do with me buying one or not. At some point, does a gun become too inexpensive? Most gun owners, like ourselves, are responsible people, people who respect guns and what they are, what they can do and what they can do in the wrong hands.

I was browsing in a major gun store in my area with a huge inventory last summer. I was just looking at the guns, there were some good deals and some beautiful Savage rifles which I thought were as cheap as you could get, until I saw the Hi Point selection. the pistols were all in the $200 range.

I was admittedly alarmed. Many were new and I was just shocked that a new firearm could be purchased for that price. It seems to me there was a similar discussion about Taurus handguns some years ago, but even Taurus handguns are more expensive used than many new Hi Point products.

If a company can cut operating costs and R&D enough to produce a product and price it competetively, especially if its made in the US, I think thats great, but I've always though that the cost of guns more than legislation deterred criminal minds from getting them.

Now, I'm not a gun snob. I don't want this thread to become a discussion about that alone. I acknowledge that most people who buy guns in a store are legit anyway. But, there are a lot of legit people with less than legit connections.

I want to make my issue known in a diplomatic way without offending, but I do want to hear other opinions on the matter. I've been reading reviews of Hi Point products lately (which are by and large positive), and I've seen discussion over the sale-to-street time for an HP product being faster than any other maker.

It makes sense in some respects. A lower entry cost, coupled with depreciation or even mild appreciation means an informal resale may be quicker.

I'm not saying there is anything irresponsible on behalf of HP. I did want to hear some discussion on the matter, though.

Thanks

It depends a lot on the shop. Here in my local gun/pawn, they have the High-Point pistols starting at $250 and going up! They sell so well, the shop bumped the price up, and still sells them!
Years ago, Rugers and Taurus guns were all dirt cheap - good quality for a good price. Then, as folks realised they were good quality - the price rose commensurately.
In time, H-P will rise too.
The H-P Carbine is still a very good buy! The ONLY advantage the Beretta has over it is magazine capacity.
Add the ATI stock, the ugly duckling begins to even look like the Beretta! And for what, a third the price!? The savings will buy mucho ammo.
I have the 9mm Carbine, and love it. Me and my buddy are eagerly awaiting the much-ballyhooed and as yet absent .45ACP version!

For a lot of retired seniors Hi-Point has made a weapon that they can afford to buy for home protection.

I personally do not prefer to replace the stock on my Hi-Point. I actually prefer to have a Planet of the Apes looking gun.

A lot people have Hi-Points and say they are ugly but go boom on every trigger pull. My 40 S&W carbine is pretty accurate, I just do not like the stock wrist, too weak in my opinion.

Thats the model I almost bought at my friends Pawn and Gun shop !
He only puts a 20 dollar mark up on most guns he sells so cost may be around 112 bucks.

Each time I'm in a sporting goods store I take a look at the Hi-Point carbines. I look forward to the release of the 45 ACP.

AH, It sure would be nice to have a local pawn shop offer that low of a mark up on firearms. Of course, my wife would then try to hide my wallet.

I paid $50 less for the same thing and also got 50 rounds of ammo thrown in on top of it.

Personally , I eally like the hi-point handguns. I have a CF380 and am getting a 45 soon. They're grrrrreat! They take abuse, are pretty accurate and cheap. Sure they're ugly and heavy, but who cares. I got mine on auctionarms.com for $60 not including fees, can't beat that price anywhere. The carbines are kinda pointless I think. You can get a good sks or an AK for about $100 more and have a much better rifle. But to each their own. Either way, grab yourself a hp pistol, you'll love it.

The PRICE of guns isn't what keeps criminals from getting them. For them, a gun is as easy to get as breaking into a house. OR... some of the best "bargains" on (stolen) guns can be found in a back alley. Crooks don't buy hi-points from a shop, because the much-hated background checks deter much of that.

What i DO hate seeing is folks buying High Points because they are cheap. Don't get me wrong, I own the 40 carbine and 2 pistols, Hi Points have their place.....but it's not in the hands of someone who knows nothing about guns and wouldn't have bought one if it weren't for the price.

Guns can't get TOO cheap, but gunshop owners can get TOO leanient when it comes to suggesting which gun to buy for folks that obviously don't respect guns to begin with.

I prefer 1911's, but I've been picking up tons of used .40 and 9mm brass at various ranges, and I'm seriously thinking about nabbing a couple of HP carbines to use the reloaded brass in. Just fun guns for plinking around with the grandson, not for hunting or self defense.

High point uses allot of the proven processes utilized by the auto industry, that was they can keep production costs low as they do, allot of folks dont care for the materials used but they work and hold together and some folks like the cost.
it puts firearms into the grasp of honist folks who dont have allot of scratch to spread around

Matt, criminals generally steal the guns they carry or buy them from other criminals who had stolen them. No criminal is going to buy and register a gun in his name regardless of price because if it was dropped at the scene of a crime it would lead the cops to him.

Thank God that Hi Point has kept their prices down where Seniors on a fixed income can still protect their family.

I also am waiting for the .45 Carbine to come out.
