Sears roebuck Lever Action 30.30?

I recently spotted a Sears Roebuck lever action rifle at a pawn shop. The man at the store seemed to think they were collectible but I don't think they are after checking it out a bit. The rifle is in very good condition, though, and is a handsome looker. I don't have a proper hunting rifle and even though I can always borrow one for an outing it would be nice to have one. Store wants 165. I could probably talk them down, especially after researching the gun a bit. (They are a house brand Winchester, but apparently the house brands just don't carry value).

Bottom line, I'm looking for reasons not to go and buy it so can anyone come up with any? Anyone have one of them?

Well, if you are looking for a reason not to buy it just tell me where it is and I will remove the temptation from you.

House brands are the same guns will lower grade woods as I understand it. I have a house brand Marlin 336 that was made for Western Auto. I love it. It shoots great and handles nicely. Birch stock vs, walnut but still looks good.

For 165 bucks? Seems like a fair price. From what I have seen most lever guns are hunted with, well cared for and shot very little. Not too many people will hot load a 30-30. Most I Find are in great condition and are great bargains. I love lever guns. Marlin is my favorite because I am not too good with most iron sights. But for that price you can always get your money out of it if you don't like it.

Marlin is easier to mount a scope on than winchesters. But I would say that rifle is a good find.

I saw some real value in a friend's store brand 30-30 this fall during hunting season...he brought a deer down with it, resulting in an additional fresh supply of meat for his family this winter.

My opinion... For $165, if it's in good working order, and funds are available to make the purchase without compromising on something else that's needed, I would not hesitate to complete the transaction.

I have a Sears .30/30. it is a Winchester with a birch stock, buchhorn sight and the magazine holds 1 less round than the name brand. other than that , its just as good as any other Winchester '94. while I only paid $30. for mine,(rusty outside good inside, it was a boat gun) $165 isnt bad for a good levergun

Depending on which model it is...It is either a Winchester or Marlin...You should be able to tell.
Sears sold both.

Yeah, thats kind of what I thought...Guess I'm coming back after lunch with a lever action rifle! Its in very good shape is really the thing, and the wood looks very good. Very smooth action, too. I'll post some pics after I pick it up!

Wood may not be a problem

No reason not to buy it. Have you considered
some good wood products that would allow you to strip the finish then stain to your desires? I have known some people who wound up with really nice looking guns in this manner. Also, if it is basic
appearance and waterproofing you seek a strip of the finish followed by multiple applications of boiled linseed oil and rubbing with ultra-fine materials can leave you with a natural looking stock. If you get a scratch later on just treat the area with more boiled linseed oil. When you look at a gun like this think of the possibilities!

OK, here it is. I went to the shop and since I had been there, the owner had up'd the price to $249! I planned to talk him down a little from the $169, but ended up just telling him I would pay the price it was set at the day before, and he agreed. Looks pretty good, could use some wood work, but its not too bad. I cleaned it up with some wood oil and some 3 in 1 before I took the shots. There's also a shot of all my guns, and I'm done for a while. I'm waiting on the new stock for the Hi Point and a scope, should come next week.

What do you all think? I think I did pretty good on this one!

Congratulations, and it's good to see you got back to the store before someone else got the good buy...

The new addition to your collection looks just like the 30-30 I mentioned my friend bringing down a deer with this fall.
