| Senior Member | 60 grain? Today I was out looking at ammo when I saw some Hornady 60grain bullets, don't remember the type, and I was wondering would they work with my gun. I have a Savage 200, and I was told before that 63 grain wouldn't work in it because it needs a 1 in 9 twist when my gun is a 1 in 12 I believe. Will the 60 grain be okay? |

| Mr. Fixit ![]() | Some will disagree with me on this, but I say grab a box and see what happens, you may be surprised. From the weights listed, I'm assuming you have a .223?

| Senior Member ![]() | It isnt the grains that affect stabilization, altho grains may affect whether the bullet can withstand the centrifical force, and fps they can stand.Naturally the heavier the bullet the less rpm,s it can stand. It is the length of the body on the bullet. When you have a boattail hollowpoint that means you have moved the core forward because of the boattail and backward because of the hollowpoint.Since you are putting more core in the body,it makes the body longer.Longer bodied bullets require faster spin to stabilise. So you can have a 60gr hollowpoint Boattail which has no lead in the ogive making the body longer, and lead moved forward to form the boattail making it longer yet that will not stabilise, and a 60gr softpoint with lead going all the way to the point with less lead in the body and flatbase which makes it shorter bodied because the base is larger diameter than a boattail that will stabilise in the same rifle.I personally stay with 55gr and under when using a 1in12"twist just to be sure. sam. |

| Senior Member ![]() | 200 is 1:9 in 223, unless something slipped past in previous. I could be wrong mind you, I am a lot. Find your twist rate. To measure the twist of a barrel, use a cleaning rod and a tight patch. Start the patch down the barrel and mark the rod at the muzzle. Push in the rod slowly until it has made one revolution, and then make a second mark on the rod at the muzzle. The distance between marks is the twist of your barrel.Stevens Model 200 - Short Action Caliber 223 REM, 22-250 REM, 243 WIN, 7MM-08 REM, 308 WIN Overall Length 41.75" Barrel Length 22" Weight 6.5 lbs Magazine Capacity 4 rounds Stock Gray synthetic with positive checkering, dual pillar bedding Sights No sights.
