I went shopping for a used .243 for my daughter a year ago (for her 10th birthday). I wanted a quality used rifle that she could use for years, not a Rossi she would want to disown in a few years. Due to the gun-buying panic, not much was available. I found a Rem Model 7 youth in .260 Rem & bought it. What a beautiful cartridge! She took her first deer a week later at 120 yards. I was VERY impressed with the way the deer dropped. It was devastating! More importantly for starting a new, small hunter, she didn't hardly notice the recoil. Pulling the trigger that evening did a lot to build her confidence. Before hand she knew dad thought she could do it & afterwards she knew she could do it. She won't outgrow this cartridge.

I had thought a .243 was the most I would have her using but the .260 Rem with a Limbsaver recoil pad is not too much for her to handle — and she's a thin girl without a lot of muscle or mass to absorb recoil.

Hope this helps!

Enjoy hunting with your son. That's about as good as life gets.
