There sure is a magnum/anti mag group in this post!! I am new to this site but contribute to many others and here is my two cents.
1. use the right bullet for your intended game
2. Bring enough gun for the animal you are hunting. To me 30cal or bigger for elk and shots that your life may depend on (BEARS)
3. use a 8" paper plate as a target, the range at which you can hit it every shot is your ETHICAL maximum range on game. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. If you are scared of the gun you will not be able to shoot it effectively . Some guns will not accurately shoot small groups past 200 yards so accept that.
4. When hunting why take a 400 yard shot when you can possibly have a 200 yard shot. Try to become a better hunter it will serve you well.
5. It is your responsibility to act in a way that will not result in the loss of gun rights for you or the millions of other citizens in America. Join the NRA and defend your gun rights.

Have fun hunting and be safe

I stand at the opportunity to purchase a NEW Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Ultra Mag for like, cheap... It is not at all the caliber I had in mind. My favorite would rather be 6,5 swede (6.5x55mm) for the kind of hunting I'll be doing with it (Elk & moose). However, since I'm a south paw, to find a bargain isn't easy. So I might come to buy this one anyhow. I've read up on this caliber and have found that I can get three different "power levels" in factory ammo, where the lightest equals a 30-06, a common round around here. So it should be a practical gun for my hunting purposes, actually! I also run an outdoors shop and retail ammo, and even have some reloading skills from my .45 acp shooting, so money shouldn't stop me from getting something to feed it with...

Are there any real arguments to spend 3X as much as I have to spend on this gun to get that Finnish made 6,5, or should I go with it, and have some extra cash to spend on a really decent scope this time??!

Everytime they take something away, they charge for it,so you can figure reduced loads will be higher priced. If you use heavier bullets and standard loads, you have less meat damage. As to recoil, there are several ways to reduce that. And then there is the old American way, trade for something you like. sam.

I'm pretty impressed with and fond of the new WSM and RSAUM rounds; especially the 300 RSAUM and 7mm RSAUM ones...

...I've been out shooting them and find them to be very effective and fully capable of meeting any hunting needs that I'll encounter, plus, my shoulder likes them too.

Now, last fall I loaded up and sent a few rounds through a 300 RUM and I wasn't as excited about that round as I now am about the above two rounds...considering it from a shooter's perspective. The lethality of the 300 RUM round and its ballistic performance are unmistakably awesome...but why beat up my shoulder any longer when the RSAUM rounds are available?

"the new 300 Super Uber mag aka the 300 SUM rofl 3800fps with a 180gr round Woohooo now I can kill that big <whatever> I never thought I'd have a chance at until the 300 SUM came along. OW and don't forget only 24 inch drop at 600 yards and B.C's of .875 with laser guided rounds so I don't even have to judge distance or make adjustments. Now THAT"s a flat shooter!ROFL"

OOooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!! Where can I get one of those??????????????:09 :

Uh... Got it mixed up. It's a 300 RUM rifle I can get for an unbelievable price bargain. And yes, I'd have to spend 3X that to get the same rifle/scope in a more "house clean" caliber! My question is rather what do I stand to loose by going for this one, rather than something in the .270 - 30-06 range, which is adequate for the job, for me anyways.

I load my own cartridges, and I'm a (newly started) ammo dealer. So I don't have to worry about expenses for ammo at all. Lucky me...

Well, that was it! One LINKS Remington Model 700T BDLT in 300 RUM is just awaiting paperworks before heading my way, hopefully in time for this fall's moose hunt!

Remington Model 700™ BDL™ Specifications

It's fitted with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 w/rainguard and steel Warne mounts.

I've decided on ammo in "power level 1" to start with, and 180 gr Nozlers. Our game isn't as tough as one should think, so it's adequate. Later perhaps a trip to Canada, or even some boar hunting i Poland, will call for some tougher rounds! We'll see... Wish me luck!!

300RUM vs .223

I just had to! Got the first box of 300RUM today. Had to compare with something!! Besides, I got this MMS from my buddy who's elk hunting this week. They got three nice 2-year olds the very first morning. -And then he sends ME the picture to ruin my day!!! -He's hunting with his .308, so I MMS'ed him back this photo and let him think the .223 is a .308. I wonder if he's gonna find out, ha ha!

My father shoots a 300rum and loves it. Sure the max we try to shoot is 200 yds but there is the occasional 350-400 yarder that sneeks in here and there. I am personally not a big fan of magnums, however. While I am trying to dial in my dope or making sure I am holding on the right mil dot he can just drop to the pod and shoot. I like my old .308 and it is a deer slayer out to about 350 yds (far as I practice), but new cartridges like the rum just make it easier to drop that once in a lifetime elk at 300 yds. Will a .308 or aught six do it. Yep but not without some finess. I am just rambling now because I get off work in an hour and Im tired.

I saw where someone mentioned it burning a barrel out in 1000-1500 rounds. Is that true? That is only ten to fifteen trips to the range. I think I'll stick to the 338 WM.

That's not far from the thruth I think, but it's with the level 3 ammo. I will primarily use level 1 or equvivalent, so I'm not worried.

my dad has to have at least 1000 rds through his and there is nothing wrong with his rifle, or is it showing any signs of fatigue. and he shoots the bruise loads or level III. Did I mention he has a muzzle brake, limb saver and one of those shoulder maxi pads? (cheater)

Ok that's better. The thought of burning up a barrel that quick kinda put me off.

I will certainly add pads on mine! Getting some sort of "active" pads with weights in them, I think. Haven't seen them yet. I'm also considering putting on a silencer, which may help on the recoil too. -But that's mostly to save my ears and not much else.

-Or even to get more than one animal at a time when hunting elk here. They come in huge heirds in the morning!

the level 1 stuff kicks like a .308. level 2 feels similar to a .300 win mag and the level 3 feels like a hot 45-70 in a guide gun with a bit more "snap"

I figured it would. It has the ballistics of the 30-06. But larger cases makes for lower pressures (I think), and less kick. Hey, I have a VERY nice 30-06 too then, ha ha!

Looking foreward to some days in October now. Got this picture on my phone from my buddy yesterday, from opening day:
