You will never go wrong with a Remington 700. There is a reason it is the choice of the military for bolt action sniper rifles...

Im not a big fan of my hogue stock. The aluminium pillars arent really doing much, I ended up having mine glass bedded to bed it properly. Also there is a bit of flex in the fore end which shows up shooting off a bipod. I think if you want a good rifle, get something with a laminated or select walnut stock. Im getting a custom built left handed thumbhole for my howa 1500 to replace the hogue.

| The caliber is going to be a big factor. But I would say for the money Savage is the way to go. Now if you want to hit very close to the $800.00 mark and you like the Mauser style action, I would consider the Ruger or a CZ. As far as the muzzle brake is concerned I would do like everyone else said (TRY IT FIRST).

Savage makes good guns. I have two "10's", a Tactical and a lightweight sporter in .223.

Have you looked into the CZ's? They are very nice as well. The Tikka, Remington, and others are great choices as well.

I got the savage with the bull, fluted stainless barrel and the works and they shoot but you need to mount it on wheels to get around. You will not be sorry when you see the groups.(mines in 30-06 they don't make it in that cal anymore but do in 308 and others)
