| In a SHTF situation, what will you take? Alright, wanted to do this for a while and never had the time. Here's the scenario: Your City/town is collapsing. You can choose if you live in an urban or rural area, specify it in your post though. You can bug out, in, or stay put. Its up to you. There are plenty of other armed citizens roaming about, some friendly, some not so much. You have plenty of food and water, let's not get into supplies. You are on foot, and have a backpack. Answer all of the following: You may take one long gun. What is it? Why? One Sidearm. What is it? Why? Besides food and water, what goes in the backpack? Why? This should be interesting, lets see what happens! Last edited by twisterx44; 03-08-2008 at 09:31 PM. |

| I live in an urban area, therefore this senario goes as thus. My longun is a CETME 7.62x51/.308. Why? 1. I already have one. 2. It's plenty accurate, has plenty of power, and ammo is readily available. My Sidearm? this is a hard one. Choosing from my personal guns which are a Ruger Blackhawk .357mag 6 1/2" barrel w/scope, a TZ99 9mm auto or a .45acp Witness P compact, I would have to choose the TZ99. Why? 1. I already have one. 2. 9mm is easy to come by. 3. We shoot good together! 4. 9mm is powerful enough if you can hit. In my back pack is more ammo, cleaning kit, my other handgun, extra socks,(LOL if you want to, but I know from experience), a pint of 101 Bacardi ( can be used as lamp fuel, disinfectant or anesthesia), and my Bible. I believe all is self explanatory. |

| i live in a town of about 20,000. I'd bug out to my parents who live 14 miles away. I'd carry my walther p-38 and my hi point c9 as a back up and I'd either use my SKS or AK-47 as my primary. |

| I live in NC Arkansas, 18miles to the nearest sizable town. I'll be staying put. With a 45acp sidearm and a good choice of long rifles, the garand being the favorite. |

| I live in a rural area. My long gun would be my bushmaster lower topped with my 6.8 upper with eotech. Sidearm would be ruger MK II heavy barrel .22 with red dot which I would add a can silencer to. Back pack would contain extra ammo and clips, 3.5-10x40mm leupold long range tactical scope for bushmaster, gps, good knife, first aid kit, compact sleeping bag, entrenching tool, 550 cord, duct tape, flint and steel, and poncho. Then let the games b |

| I would head bush. The rifle i would take is a No1 Mk3 .303 no question, tough as nails and you know it will not fail no matter what conditions you will face and has a 10 rd magazine and really there is nothing you could not shoot with it. The pistol would be a .22 for use on smaller animals so as to cause minimal damage to edible meat. The backpack would include another set of clothes, a pair of binoculars, a knife + stone and steel, cleaning gear and ammo, first aid kit and ammunition for both rifle and pistol, a handful of cigarette lighters, plenty of packets of tobacco and papers and a few bars of soap and a torch with a few packs of batteries, and some bailing twine. | I live in the Burbs of a big city. I would imagine if the SHTF here it would be the same everywhere so bugging out would not be an option. Besides, I'm not the bugging out type. I own an AR-15 and a Cetme 308, but in this situation my long gun of choice would be my old Ithaca 37 12 gauge shotgun. Reason; If there are a lot of bad guys around chances are any shooting your forced to do will be close up and personal. I would be much better served by a shotgun than a rifle. Also, depending on what I needed it for I have a wide range of ammo, from slugs to bird shot and everything in between....for defending myself to shooting small game and birds for food. My Ithaca is an older one that you can just hold the trigger back and slam the for-end as fast as you can and it just keeps firing, giving me a little psychological advantage. Hand gun would be my SA XD45TAC. Reason: same thing ...close up stuff. I want something that will cause extreme damage(no matter where it hits) and carries as many Rd's. as possible. The 45 makes the biggest holes and the 14 rd. capacity of the XD45 can't be beat for that size caliber. Backpack: I presume I would be in a lot of fight or flight situations so I would carry as much ammo without weighing myself down as possible. Especially for the shotgun. A couple of days of MRE's and water. A good fighting knife, hatchet or Machete, some med. supplies, cleaning supplies, lots of matches or flint and a blanket. Being in an urban environment, you really wouldn't need that much seeing how easily it would be to scavenge what you need. This was a very good question. Thanks for asking. |

| Varmit/target rifle and .45 commander A bolt action rifle in either .243 or 7mm/08 with a 24" heavy target/varmit barrel and high quality long range scope. I want distance between me and any target as a well protected /well hidden firing point may be crucial to your immediate survival. This may not be a time for a standing shot at 75 yards to get food. A .243 or 7mm/08 will be a good game getter without being a major meat destroyer (a quality you may really need). I prefer the 1911 A-1 style 4 inch barrel .45 commander semi-auto as I shoot better with a 4 inch than the regular 5 inch barrel. To me it is better balanced in a steel frame gun. Backpack should include 100 rounds for each weapon, cleaning/lubrication supplies, lens cleaner for the scope, and a wide variety of first aid materials to include antibiotics and water purification tablets. Study up on antibiotics and keep dosage sheets in your backpack as you may need to break into a pharmacy, clinic, or hospital for needed medicines. Also study an emergency field first aid manual now and have it in your backpack for referral. Make certain you can sterilize then suture a bad cut after controlling (to the greatest extent possible) bleeding. I am not sure any benefit would come from specifying a starting point. Wherever you begin you will encounter a rapid psychological breakdown of the general population. You will need to move (even within a small geographic area) swiftly and with as little visibility as possible to survive. Last edited by nathangdad; 03-09-2008 at 11:55 AM. Reason: addition |

| Senior Member | Urban area and I'm staying put. The only reason I'm moving is to seek out intelligence and I would remain hidden during daylight. Once I can determine who's who I'm going to take out the unfriendlys. AR-15 due to weight of ammo and carry handle being quickly able to mount a scope. I'll be using a Schmidt and Bender 8x power with a 56mm objective and extremely heavy crosshair for night shooting if needed. I would carry at least 300 rounds (ten 30 round clips) of .223 ammo for the AR-15. ![]() .22 ruger pistol with 3 clips loaded. I'd use it on hostiles in buildings where the sound might be muffled and I was trying to be stealth and could not use a knife. Knife with tanto blade. Fishing line for booby traps or warning devices behind me. Rain poncho for slithering in mud or dirt. Night vison monocular. Line to tie up people if needed, duct tapes for the mouth. I would be moving them to a more secure location for questioning. Matches and small bottle of something flammable to draw attention away from myself. Small mini head lamp that uses AAA batteries. Small mini back up light that uses AA batteries. Magic marker to leave a message on face of dead hostiles such as..."Leave town" Guess that's it.
