I bought a DPMS flat top upper for my AR I have been using a Enfield #5 in 303 to hunt hogs with. The Enfield is a military surplus jungle carbine, so it has open peep sights. The the 338 AR also has peep sights I chose not to use a scope because hogs run in packs, and I can get follow up shots quicker with open sights. I can usually get to within 35-40 yards of the hogs. I do not reload 338 so i use Federal ammo. By using open sights I have shot 3 hogs before they scatter in open country. In heavy bush I have never got more than 2. I am very happy with my new hog gun.
When I first read about the .338 in Gunhunter magazine when it first came out, I fell in love.....but I've since learned about the .358 Winchester. And now I lust after the Winchester chambering in a lever action.
I keep thinking I realy want a 338 Federal, but I have a 30-06, so there really is no need for me to have the 338 Fed. The '06 will take anything in North Amercia that I will likely ever hunt, and the 338 Fed is not powerful enough for Elephant and Rhino, so why bother?
I like that the 338 is a tougher bullet than most 30's. I would prefer a 338/06 to the 338 Fed but no manufacturer is building one now since Weatherby stopped best I know. I think that the 338 Marlin or 338 Fed. would do very well for Southern hog and bear.
I've been looking real hard at the old 358 winchester. Same idea only with a 35 cal. bullet. I never have figured out why this round never caught on better than it did. It's almost as good as a 338 and with a heavier bullet. I think the 338 Fed. is about 2.2 inches flatter at 300 yards but uses a 15gr lighter bullet to do this.
I concur and chime in for you to have your .358 Winchester. It is a sleeper wakened when owned. It is rarely owned because most are asleep when considering it.
