The barrel must be 16 inches or longer to be legal.

I'm customizing a mini-14 for hog hunting. I like the socom-16 but can't afford one. I'm basically making the poor man's model. Already cut the barrell down to 16 inches, but I didn't know how short I could go on overall length.

Twenty-six inches. But ask the BATFE to be sure. Advice you get on this forum will not hold in a court of law.
