| poor man's socom-16
I'm building a short mini-14 mainly for brush gun, hog hunting, etc. I've already cut the barrel to 16 inches and added a scout rail. I wanted to cut down the stock, but I don't know the legal minimum overall length for a rifle. Anybody have a clue?

Just buy one of these, I suppose they're legal everywhere: Butler Creek Stainless Steel Folding Stock for Ruger MINI 14/30 |

I'm not a big folding stock fan. I know shotguns have a minimum length, but not sure about rifles.

I don't like them either. The stock on the mini-14 is rather petite anyway, if you made it much smaller it would lose it's utility, you may as well go to the pistol grip choate design and remove the folding stock. I had a mini-14 for many years, thought it was pretty handy right out of the box. | |

The overall length must be 26" or it is a Short-Barreled Rifle.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I saw a similar project in a magazine and there's a company that offers the alterations as a package but they listed no specifics on stock length, only barrel length.

| Minimum overall length for a rifle is 26". That would mean 10" longer than the barrel.
