how important is a 2nd shot....Well......

I just got off the phone with my Brother in law from Mich. Him and his father were in Copper Harbor UP doing some maint on their cabin. They decided to take the 4 wheelers out and check their bear blinds. Usually (well everytime I have been with them) we take handguns for the occasional run in with mama bear. Never happened in the 8 years I have been going with them, but this time was different I guess. He said he was re nailing some of the plywood when he heard a loud snort followed by what sounded like train coming through the bushes. He grabbed his remington 742 and turned around to see about a 250lb sow coming at his dad. He fired his first round striking the bear in the stomach area, the second hit the bear in the right in the upper shoulder area shattering both shoulders and dropped the bear about 6 feet from his father. His dad did draw and fire 3 rounds but none hit the bear. He was still standing next to the bear when he called me. They have to wait for DNR to come out and examine the bear. Figured I would share, and I guess I will keep my Remington 7600 for bear season up there. Oh and his 742 is a 30-06 and his dad was packing a smith .500.

You know you need at least a .270 for bears, right? lol

That's a heck of a story though, good thing they were prepared!

Glad to hear your brother did well in stopping the bear before tragedy occured.

I have had plenty of bear encounters but have never been charged.

If there is another "charge" event for your father, hopefully that .500 hits the mark !

Yeah I tried to make light of the matter when talking to him and said that the bear probably got scared to death and the aht six had nothing to do with it.

Cut dads shirttail off for missing...He needs to learn not to PANIC, and aim before firing...He could have been mauled if it hadn't been for the Rifleman doing his Job !!!

Hey, us fat guys resent that remark! Ain't going hunting with any of you guys, I'll tell ya that......

Glad to hear the story had a happy ending. Sounds like ol' Dad needs to get to know the Smith a little better. 'Course, I've never had a bear coming at me either.

Well that S&W .500 should have dropped it had he hit it and in the right spots. That's the trouble with those hand cannons under pressure. Hard to hit what you're aiming at when in a panic. Not saying I would have hit it in a panic or that I wouldn't have had to go and change my drawers either though. lol

Good little story, thanks for sharing it with us...

Yeah, I've also heard you only need to carry a .22 with you too, so you can shoot the fat guy in the leg when the bear charges.

Damn! Now I know why Moose asked me to hunt with him! No more late night sammiches! Dad needs to trade that pistol in, or start shooting it! I have shot exactly one bear with a pistol. He was a VERY old son of a biscuiteater. He wanted my salmon, and I gave it to him, along with a $450 flyrod. As I retreated, he decided I looked plump for the picking. I shot in front of him to try and spook him off, and damned if he didn't raise up to me! I shot him 5 times in the head and chest and he walked about 20 ft biting and clawing the earth. Meanwhile I was backpeddling and trying to get a speedloader out of my fishing vest. My pistol was a S&W M29. He died right there on the bank. He was dead before I reloaded, but I shot him 2 more times. It was in a remote area, and I just left him there. I reported it to F&G, and I paid a $500 fine just to make the mess go away. I wish I didn't have to shoot him, it just happens here. I can tell you that he had 5 teeth left in his jaw, and that Grizz was one old sucker!
