| .17HMR power I bought a savage .17HMR last week and have shot it a few times (at targets).i talked to a friend about using it for squirel this year and he said its way to much gun for a squirel, but he has never shot 1 with a .17 so i wanted some opinions on this. |

| the .17 is accurate as all hell if you are using v-max bullets shootem in the head, they also have fmj bullets and 20 gr. hunting bullets that mushroom... with the later two shoot them like a deer. I use the .17 HMR exclusively fo squirrel |

| If you are going to eat them it is too much gun; unless you only head shoot them. Even then sometimes it might be. i have heard of it easily blowing a squirrel in half. (even with head sometimes ripping the hole upper body off) i have never shot a squirrel with one either tho, just hearsay so try it out Last edited by sell33; 04-12-2008 at 11:09 PM. | I have a Savage 17 HMR, and it does great on squirrels. It goes through before it cause to much damage, and I use the CCI's TNT's. |

| This might not be true today but not very long ago (less than a month ago) i read that CCI makes all of the 17HMR ammunition and just switches the packaging for each company so it all should shoot very well

| My savage shoots the best so far using the CCI V-MAX ammo. I was able to shoot about 15 chicken eggs from about 175 yds this past weekend. I havnt tried it on any squirrels yet but I can imagine what it will do to one when a chicken egg almost vaporizes at that range. |

| What I think your friend meant, was, it carries so much velocity, it tends to go right through the critter, depending on how close you are and where you hit it. Obviously, a head shot, or into bone, probably not gonna go any farther. I think it's a great little round.

| Body shots typically end up with a hole going in that you can not see until you skin it, and a hole coming out you can put your entire thumb in... Only take head shots unless you just want to splatter them...

| have shot a couple hundred ground sqirrels this year so far started out using 22 with 10 22 ruger bull barrel then switiched to savage 17 hmr. I hate to see wounded animals no matter the size and got way to many with the 22 they would run or hobbble after being hit that rarely happens with th 17 M<y 22s will see a lot less use from now on 22 hmr super cartridge |
