I live in the "L" area of Tn., which means liberal limits apply. By purchasing all tags available for deer hunting we can legally harvest 300+ deer in a season here. And, of course, use rifle for about 5 weeks of the 3 month+ season and muzzleloaders for about an additional 2 weeks as well.

funny thing in Indiana, you can't use a rifle to hunt deer but you can use anything you want for squirrels, like the bullets are going to magically disappear while shooting up at them.

No I don't hunt yet, but will soon.

As for my dream rifle it would be a newly manufactured mosin nagant with a heavy barrel, bent bolt, and a good side mounted scope atop it, chambered for the same round as all the others of course, but would not shoot milsurp ammo through it. Give it a nice nonfancy stock, a harris bipod, a good camo job and I'll call it good.

i'd like to have a remington 673 in 308 if i had to go factory. if i could customize it itd be a 673 in .338 Fed. but more realistically i'd like to have a H & R Ultra Varmint in .223 with the heavy barrel and laminate thumb hole stock...and a couple other barrels for it--probly a 45-70, an ought 6, 460 s & w, might as well get a .50 cal muzzle loader barrel for it while I'm at it. and who knows maybe a couple others. 35 whelen maybe? do those all count as one rifle? they all go on the same frame. same frame same rifle right?

I've got a 673 in .308 and I do love it! It may have been the perfect caliber for that guide gun and if I told you just how cheaply I got it AND a 6.5RM 673 NIB for...you'd puke! There's another similar rifle (no vent rib) made in SM calibers that might be better for the .338 conversion, by the way. Nice choices, all!

Don't wanna hijack this thread but I thought Indiana was going to change the rules up and let you use a rifle- "if it uses a pistol cartridge" ?
And what is even more odd was the fact that it was perfectly legal to use a TC Contender (pistol) years ago in 35 rem. go figure.

They did change it so you can use rifles in pistol calibers, I should've phrased it like so "funny thing in Indiana, you can't use rifles in rifle calibers to hunt deer". (I can pm you with a snippet of the hunter's guide if you want.)

I personally think of hunting deer as with a rifle in a full power caliber. Not using a shotgun, or a muzzle loader, or bow and arrow, let alone a rifle chambered in a pistol cartridge. This is the 21st century not the 19th century.
If and when I hunt deer I'd rather go out of state to do it, so I can use a rifle.

Not wanting to contradict your opinion here, but I think you might find a couple of pistol calibers that would translate into EXCELLENT deer calibers, mainly the .44mag and .480 Ruger. Firing these heavy bullets out of 18" or longer barrels improves their ballistics significantly. Using factory heavy loaded bullets and loads you would have a very potent and likely very accurate 125 yd rifle. A 275 or 300gr .44 or 325gr .480 is an excellent short range deer round. I've hunted deer a lot previously with shotgun, and I'd prefer one of these rounds over a 12 or 20ga. Simply my opinion.

I didn't say pistol calibers were inferior for deer hunting. I just said I'd rather use a rifle.
Of course I guess I sort of implied that given the wording of my paragraph.

+1... I'd prefer one of my rifles too...just thought as a substitute when it was the only game in town, I'd utilize a heavy pistol caliber. I used to live in a shotgun only area, but I suppose I've gotten spoiled the last 15yrs or so.
