JEEZ LOU-EEEZ a 30/30 isn't a 45/70. Given the right gun, you can jack up a 30/30 to some pretty good velocities and I don't think H&R's have a tubular magazine, but I could be mistaken.

Yes you can chamber a spitzer round. You can also load 1+1 that is one in the chamber and one in the mag. The only thing you need to be careful of is that you don't load the magazine with point of the bullet on the primer of the round in front of it. To keep from loading in an unsafe manner I would open the action throw a round in and chamber it then load the mag with the next spitzer round. Ive done this with my .30-30.

Your right about the H&R not having a tubular mag. Did you know that you can jack up 45-70 loads too. They even have special loads for the Marlin. But it could all be a rumor I heard over the phone when I discussed THIS SAME SUBJECT with the nice folks at SIERRA BULLETS. I guess that the people at guns & ammo, and the shooting times didn't know what they were talking about either. Some loading manuals even mention this, but they must be wrong too. By the way my rifle is a Marlin 336cs.

Mine are both '86 clones, one is a Browning MT Centenial and the other is a Win. '86 Ultra light wt. and I do jack the loads up quite a bit.

I use hard-cast 405gr flat points. They seem like they would stop a tank, and in my 1895, they kick like the devil. So I've loaded them down somewhat......but still have alot of faith in them.

I've also been using the 405 gr FP bullets, loaded with a medium charge. They are lively to shoot, and seriously deadly on impact.

What you are wanting to do is ok as long as you are careful. As far as the Barnes bullets go let me speak to that. I am a HUGE Barnes fan and currently own 3 H&R 45-70's. A friend of mine has 3 also and we spent the better part of last summer working up loads and testing the 45-70. We used several different bullets but I stuck with the Barnes. I worked up some loads using the Barnes X .458 spitzers made for the win mag and the like. The best I could get out of one was 2700 fps and I called Barnes to see if they had any suggestions. They said that the spitzers will not propperly expand bellow 1600fps and that drastically reduces your range. We worked with the 45-70 tsx bullets from then on and got some good speeds out of them but couldn't control them over about 2900fps. Barnes did say that the ones they make for the 45-70 will propperly expand down to 1100 fps.Just some info for you as it sounds like you may be headed in the same general direction that we went.
