Being a Brit, I have to have an "approved secure storage facility" to comply with our crazy gun laws. Agreed, locks will not stop a determined thief but they will seriously delay your common opportunist scumbag and will keep your insurance company happier. As for fire retardation, I'm not too bothered as, like a house or car, they are only material things and can be replaced.

real life break in to steal contents of a Knak Box the thieves try'd with a sledge hammer and a couple large wrecking bars and failed to get the job box open.
I think if they had a 12# pinch point bar or a cold chisel & hand sledge they coulda gotten it open, anything is better than a glass front cabinet, if you can afford fire proof/resistant safes with combination's and alarm get it.
the problem is the other more easily disposed of articles from your home copper pipe & wires, propane & heating oil, nothing like comming home on a winter evening to a froze house
I invested in a game camera for the back yard, I want to see what goes on while Im at work.

Keep it in the closet, make sure the closet is set up on your alarm system, and just for extra security have a nice booby trap (Claymore mines are lovely). The more headaches one has to deal with when braking into a house, the less likely it is to be broken into. Dog, burglar bars, & alarms work wonders but having a neighbor like Joe Horn of Texas (shot two burglars in his neighbor's yard) is PRICELESS!! All my neighbors are just like me...gun nuts
