if youre just starting out maybe go cheap. find an sks in 7.62 x 39. its not an AR but theyre still fun to shoot and can be bought for about 200 where a decent ar is gonna run you at least 700 or so. the sks is semi automatic and has a 10 round magazine. and the ammo for the sks is cheap. shoots the same round as an ak47. oh and the m4 and m16 are full auto----which means that you can not own one unless you get a class III weapons license. the AR15 is the civilian semi auto version. if you want an semi auto thats the way i'd go. if you can deal with a bolt action----probably more accurate, less likely to waste ammo, etc-----maybe think about a military surplus gun like a mauser in 8mm (about $150 and less for just shooter grade) or a mosin nagant (under $100). ammo for both is cheap and can be found at most gun shows (at least most of the ones i've been to) or easily ordered off the internet. 223 ammunition which the AR shoots is generally better made ammunition but is also more expensive. if this is your first gun maybe just start out with a 22 rifle of some kind. 500 rds for 10 bucks. and you should be able to find a decent marlin 60 or ruger10/22 for under $200

if you've got the money go for what ever you want. money is always one of the main factors in my decisions so i tend to be very cheap

cruise over to the AR-15/M16 section of the forum (located with the military guns) they'll school you proper.

If you want an M4 style AR, nows the time to buy. With the elections coming up everyones afraid of another ban.

I would advise finding an aquantance that goes to the range and having him give you some hands on experiences. The first things you should buy before a firearm is a good video on the AR,s and shooting them,or at least a book, and ear and eye protection.Call some ranges and find out if they rent firearms and whether they have instructors. sam.

Need to know what you're going to use it for. Buying "a rifle" is like buying a "motor vehicle." Do you want/need an economy compact/Porche/Pickup/SUV/18 Wheeler? What?
