wsm?

hey to all. I accuirred a winchester model 70 7mm WSM, black sinthetic stock. I really enjoy this gun and cant wait to drop a buck with it. It was a x-mas present, I'm not really familiar with the WSM. I do like this gun, but ammo is a little tough to find. I was wondering if anyone else here has a WSM or has experience with one. If so I could reqally use some info- good/bad/what to expect/ life span etc......

The WSM's are one of the hottest selling rifle calibers on the market today. They were disigned with a fat, short case to give magnum performance with short action bolt rifles, while using slightly less powder to achieve close to the velocities of their long action, belted cousins. They will last the average hunter a lifetime, with good cleaning and care. I have a 300 WSM, and love it. It is very accurate and reliable. The biggest downside would be, due to it being a short action platform, it is hard to load the heavier bullets because of the length restrictions of the magazine. Good luck with your new rifle!

Congrats, as you've gotten hold of one of the best calibers there EVER was invented for CXP2 and CXP3 game. It's a fine caliber! I have owned a .270(still do) and .300WSM and own 5 OTHER SMs!
I suppose I might admit to being a pretty big fan of calibers that are shorter and MORE powerful than some standard ones. Here's a link to some VERY good priced ammo that I can recommend. Best of luck, and enjoy your new rifle.!

Burningtree, I haven't ever shot one but everything i hear is that it is an excellent round, albeit a little much for deer sized game but it should do well on any game you plan to hunt on this side of the ocean.

With a bullet weight selection ranging from 90gr,100gr,110gr,120gr varmint to 130gr,140gr,150gr,and 160gr,hunting,they have a decent selection of bullets.fps ranges from about 3550fps for the 90gr to about 2700fps for the 160gr.I had the best performance using 110gr Hornady vmax at 3250fps for varmints and 140gr psp,s at about 2950fps for deer size game including a cow elk I didnt shoot but saw it happen. The elk was a drop in it,s tracks one shot double lung shot. Most of the deer or antelope I saw were shot with 130gr or 140gr and either dropped or only ran a few yds. They are flat shooting and deliver good balistics out to 400yds.We didnt get the utmost accuracy with 160gr Nosler partition but the 1in10twist really isnt enough and from what I have seen out to 300yds a 140 will do for all but the biggest game.Even there at 200yds and under they look good to me. sam.

I'm curious as to why you chose to use the word "close" when referring to the velocity SMs attain vs their regular length cousins. ALL ballistics tables I've seen show me that they meet and in some cases exceed the velocities attained by the older, longer mags. If you are referring to the fact that you cannot reload your SM to meet the factory specs or to match long magnums, I don't see your reason in saying that. Thanks.

The reason he said "close is the short fat cases have a problem both in case capacity and seating depth. They have a lower powder capacity to start with and if you seat a heavy bullet so it works in the action it takes even more powder space forcing you to use faster burn rate powder at higher pressures to get the fps.The longer higher capacity cases can accomidate a heavier/longer bullet and still use the slower burn rate powders to obtain higher fps at lower pressures. They are so "close"only the chronigraph knows the difference. sam.

Very good rifle cartridge combo. As for ammo, I reload, so I don't look much at factory stuff. For whatever reason the 7WSM is the least popular seller of the WSMs. Or so I've read. (don't flame me, I'm just relating info, not suggesting something's wrong with the 7WSM) I don't know why really. 7mm offers a vast selection of bullets, and the 7WSM is a great round. But, ammo on the shelf might be difficult to find in some places. Shouldn't be a problem to find and order though.

I own a 7mm wsm and the problem I found was with higher bc heavier bullets I had to seat them deeper in the case and take up powder space forcing me to use faster burn rate powder. This is in a Win.M70 black shadow. If you have to use light bullets it makes more sense to stick with the ,270 WSM,with a better balistic table. sam.

7mmwsm The best of the wsm

I have a 7mmwsm and shoot 140gr Noslers Balistic tips & partitions at a tad under 3300 fps out of a 24" barrel, 1/9 twist Hart stainless, I have owned a lot of guns over the years but this catridge is superb.
The 7mmwsm might die because the American market is brainwashed with th .270 wsm only because Jack Oconnor raved on the .270 win but he did say the 280 Rem was a better choice, just like the 7mm is better than the .270wsm, Higher BC bullets, and way more bullet choices than the .270.
The short stubby cartridges shoot small groups, and at long distances here is a good read on the 7mmwsm and a photo of my 7mmwsm
