| .308 recoil............. so i am on the verge of buying my first hunting, bolt action rifle. i was looking at the 308 caliber as one of my options and wondered how the recoil is compared to my 7.62x39? is it the same or quite noticeabley more? the reason why i ask is i wonder if it will affect my accuracy by flinching or other. thanks. |

| The .308 will recoil more, all other things being equal. The 7.62x39 recoils like a .30-30. You can get used to a .308 easily. Find 100 rounds or so of surplus ammo (cheaper) and have some fun learning your new rifle. What are you going to hunt?

| If you PULL the firearm TIGHT into your shoulder and keep using a pull motion when you fire, you will decrease the recoil by a considerable amount. Position is probably one of the most important steps in shooting and in decreasing the effect of recoil, a tight position will allow the recoil to be absorbed by the entire upper body, versus just the shoulder. If you have a loose grip, you will feel it. Stable and Tight positions are the only way to eliminate the effects. Doing so, the .308 or 7.62mm is child's play. The WORST thing you can do to yourself, is go to the Firing Line playing MIND GAMES and having a FEAR for the weapon. NO ONE shooting a firearm has ever been killed or wounded from the Butt stock. You need to practice squeezing the trigger with a dime on the front sight and not allowing the dime to fall off. You need to keep the eye open and use good FOAM earplugs, pushed way in to eliminate sound concussion. DO NOT JERK the trigger and have a slow and stead pressure for a nice follow through, meaning KEEP the trigger all of the way back, until the projectile has gone through the intended target, then release. Fire a few rounds to get familiar with the firearm and above all, RELAX. Last edited by Wingwiper; 07-04-2008 at 06:46 AM. |

| Ever shot a 30-06? That's what a .308 feels like. The .308 recoil is maybe just the teensiest bit less in identical rifles, but I doubt you'd notice the difference. Pehaps I'm just overly sensitive to recoil, but I'd hardly call it "nothing" as others claim. Last edited by Taurus Fan; 07-05-2008 at 09:26 AM. |

| Military Rifle Collector ![]() | Recoil depends on the rifle as well. A larger heaver rifle in .30-06 or .308 will have less recoil than a carbine. There of course is a difference between semi automatic rifles and bolt action. The semis generally will have less recoil because the actions bleed off some of the gasses so there is less to kick back at you from the muzzle. I have an Argentine Mauser bolt action in .30-06 that is the worst shoulder shocker I have. It is a 6 shot rifle. You shoot 6 shots and thats all you want to shoot out of it. On the other hand I can easily put 1000 rounds through my M1 Garand at one sitting with no problems.

| I'm getting picky and mean no offence,"BUT"a .22lr can generate tremenduous firepower, only heavy bullets with lots of powder pushing them can create recoil. sam. |

| In any normal sized rifle, includeing my brother's featherweight the 308 has almost no recoil. You'll have no problem. |

| spiritual counselor ![]() ![]() | you will get used to it. then in a year or two (if you are anything like me) you will want a BIGGER one! recoil be dammned! full speed ahead! get a semi auto .308 and put 20 rounds downrange in a hurry....

| The 308 is pleasant for me to shoot. And with all the fancy recoil pads Gun manufactures are useing now. Shouldn't be a factor in buying a rifle in 308. I personaly would not own a smaller caliber, not even a 7mm-08. A.H |
