Well I busted my Vanguard (.270 fyi) back out day before yesterday and did some target practicing and I think that the barrel is broken in now cause i went through a box of 20 and was able to keep under 1 inch groups. if i planned on getting another gun and was available in a Vanguard to be honost I would problubly get another Vanguard, so far I love mine. My only complaint is my scope lol its a 3-9x50 Nikon Prostaff, I think eventually I will end up getting a stronger scope for it something that i can look out and see more upclose on my target.

Howa has come out with a 22" Predator model. Mel over at Snipershide.com thinks enough of them to make sniper rifles out of them for sale.

i havent fired any rems lately, but i just took my vanguard out for the first time, the factory test sheet showed a pattern the smaller than a quarter, but even with just the bore sighting i was hittin pop bottles at 75 yrds. very accurate from my experience. its not the lightest rifle in the world, but from a standing position i can hold it pretty steady.
also, alot of people tried to get me all worked up about the recoil from my .300 wby magnum... all the hype was B.S.
as far as the stock goes, its pretty comfortable for my build. i would like it to be about an inch or maybe two longer, but i've got pretty long arms. the recoil pad did its job very well.
399$ rifle, 150$ nikon prostaff 3-9x40 scope, 50$ or so in hardwear and i've got a mean little elk harvester. if only a descent round was cheaper than 2.50 a peice....

anyway, i'm now a fan of the weatherby vangaurd. and i'm sure once i get it to a range and really scoped in i'll be ever more of a fan.

I've got three Weatherby Vanguards. Two of the $399 Vanguard synthetics (.243 Win and 25-06 Rem) and one Vanguard Varmint Special in .223 Rem. I did put Timney triggers on them just because I like Timney triggers. After working up handloads I can get under 1" with all of them. Factory loads didn't do as well.

I use EGW one piece bases, Burris QD rings, and Weaver V24 scopes on all three.

By the way, the Remington one piece weaver style base will not work on the short action. The two piece will work fine. I mention this because the Remington one piece (weaver type) is called out for the short action but will not fit. Had my gunsmith scratching his head on that one.

Here is a picture of the three from left .223, 25-06, .243. The .223 is still wearing a Nikon that has since been replaced with a Weaver.

Well,

not every model of the Vanguard has the accuracy guarentee. Check the Weatherby website for details.

Personally I would advise you to look into the new Marlin bolt rifles as they are affordable and are getting great accuracy and overall great reviews in the gun magazines.

From the Weatherby web site.

Quote:
All Weatherby® rifles are guaranteed to shoot a 1 1/2" or better 3-shot group at 100 yards from a cold barrel when used with premium (non-Weatherby calibers) or Weatherby factory ammunition.
Where am I missing the exclusions?

I got the reminton 2 piece for mine because ididnt like how tight the 1 piece was, I had them take out out of the package and put it on the gun to see how tight itwas and was just to much for me, so i got the 2 peice instead.

I personally view the Savage 110, Weatherby Vanguard/Howa 1500 and Remington 700 as being pretty much on the same level quality wise, any of them will make for a superb hunting rifle.

However, I do like the Howa/Weatherby action a bit better than the others, because it incorporates a "Sako style" extractor and seems to be a bit stouter than the Savage or Remington actions.

wow, I though this thread had died! So much has happened since I first posted. I had a deep hunger for a 7-08 but suddenly a car breakdown and an illness (Steyr-itis) kept me from getting it. A year and 3 months later and I do have my 7mm, but it's a 7x57 Mauser and I also have a stable of M95s that I'm playing with. One became a 8x56R sporter, bottom load, over the bore scope, one in process to become a 6.3x54R Finn and 2 nice ones to keep stock for history. I've learned a lot in the last 15 months and am very happy with my 7x57 and am also enjoying reloading for it. It should do everything the 7-08 does. BUT I still have to buy a new gun. I promised my #2 son a new rifle if he would go hunting with me this fall. He agreed and will get a 30-06 (his choice) in either a $399 Big-5 Savage package gun or a Marlin XL7, sans scope, for $375 at my local gun shop.

Have always had Rugers and Howas. I'm now strictly a Howa man as they are very accurate and the trigger is easily adjustable. Putting in a different trigger is a waste of time and monet. Both of mine will adjust to slightly below 2 lbs and there is no creep...and if there were, you could adjust that out too. My vote...Howa 1500.

Vanguard Synthetics - Absolutely Super

Christmas 2009, my kids bought me a Vanguard Synthetic in 300WSM and I absolutely fell in love with the rifle and 300WSM cartridge. First time to the range, got it to 1 MOA. Got it down to .5 MOA. Holds zero no problem.

I just picked up a Vanguard Synthetic in 223 Rem yesterday, 17 July 2010 and installed the scope and rings. Will be going out Sunday after church with my son.

I tried the Tasco 6-24x44 scope on my 223 Rem 700 Varmint and get .25 MOA every time.

Bought the same scope an installed on Ruger Target .308, the Vanguard 300 WSM, and son's Rem 700 Tactical in 308. All give spectacular results and hold zero round after round.

Son bought a Marlin 7XS in 308 two weeks ago as a regular shooter and installed the Tasco 2.5-10x42 Illuminated Mil-Dot reticle and he is at 1 MOA on that light rifle on first sight in. We will tweak in on another range day.

This new Vanguard 223 got the Tasco 6-24x42 Illuminated Mil-Dot and I'll let you know how it shoots.

Update to the 18 July 2010

My son and I sighted in the scope on the Vanguard 223 Synthetic this afternoon and and got it to .8 inch groups. This was using Hornady V-Max 50 gr bullets with 3031. There is absolutely no doubt you can tweak this rifle in much tighter. I'll keep you posted.

Oh yes, the new Tasco 6-24x42 Illuminated Mil-Dot worked like a champ.

Weatherby 300 WSM final sight in

28 August - Had great weather at Spring Valley Range south of Xenia, Ohio. I was able to get my Vanguard rifle down to just a bit tighter than 1/2 inch MOA shooting 180gr Hornady SST using IMR 3031.
Tomorrow, I plan on taking out my Vanguard 223 and finalize sight-in as I have reloaded a bunch of 223 with Hornady 50gr V-Max.
Also, My son and his friend have identical Remington 700 Tactical rifles in .308 with 20 inch barrels...they are planning to see who is the most accurate shooter. Since they both tweaked in their rigs with me on Saturday and both hitting consistent bulls-eyes, it should be an interesting showdown.

Bingo!! For $300, the Marlin XL7/XS7's are the best deal in a deer rifle

Too bad nobody told him before he coughed up for the Weatherbeater.

big shrek - If Marlin doesn't make it you can't buy it

Marlin rifles are limited to the -06 and .308 Win cartridges. If you want a 300 WSM as I did, Weatherby Vanguard is the way to go. I liked the weight, balance and feel of the Weatherby so I bought a .223 Rem. Love them both. Noticed you are from NW Florida...I did almost 8 years in Special Ops at Hurlburt Field. Loved every minute of it. Also miss salt water fishing like its going out of style. Oh yes, in one of my earlier posts I mentioned my son and his friend were going to have a friendly competition. Both had nearly identical Rem 700 Tacticals in .308 - both kicked butt and in the final tally, my son earned bragging rights.

The OP was looking for a 7mm08, which Marlin has, along with a few other cartridges

Not much fishing lately...I probably won't for a year or two...
I'll probably stick to Freshwater lakes for awhile.

Eventually Marlin will make Magnums, but they've got plenty to do with the way several of their rifles are selling.

The 795 is going like Hotcakes...
The XL7/XS7's are flying off the shelves as well...
The 60 is still the Most Popular Rimfire Rifle with over 12 million sold...
And their lever-action line (39A, 336, 1895) put Winchester's lever line out of biz.

There's nothing in North America that can't be dropped with a .30-06
If ya need bigger for Alaska, grab a Marlin 1895SBL or GBL in .45-70
It'll take out the biggest grizz

I still spend time on most of the bases out here...even tho retired from the Army...
Hog & Deer hunting on Eglin is a true joy
NAS Pensacola has an Imax theatre & Museum...and the Blue Angels
Corry still has the NEX Mall...
Truly strange things fly around near Hurlburt...some of the stuff they test out there looks strange as heck...
And they still crash eggbeaters at Whiting

Hrm, that reminded me, there was one particularly scorchin hot brunette Tech Sgt attached to the Specters back in 1995.
That gal had a body...she took us Army grunts on a tour of the gunship, although I still can't remember a thing she said...LOL
Pretty fun learning how to laser-spot targets for the Spectre, tho...those things are unbelievable!!!
Just a big flying death machine...enemies of the USA should be VERY afraid, because you simply cannot hide from them.
