.270 vs .308

For what it's worth...a 30/30 with 150gr core-lockts makes a bigger exit hole then 30.06 .308 or .270 do...the deer shot with a 30/30 absolutely POURED blood from the first step to the last step. YMMV

These boys down here live and breath hunt'in and will quit there jobs if they can't get off to hunt.
Our schools close for the first day of Deer season down here. Some for the whole week.
More people hunt down here than you can imagine.

We have a 3 point rule here so that means a Buck has to have 3 points on one side.
I just called the Arkansas Game and Fish commishion to see how many Deer were legaly checked in, in just my county which is Union.

8,693 deer were harvested last year, just in my county. So I suspect some know how to shoot LOL

i like the .30 calibers my self, so i pick .308, as i have said before within the ranges most of us are able to make a good clean kill, the .270 all the way up the change, is very capeable of taking game. so i guess what i am saying is go with what you like best study the ballistics of both rounds, and make your decision on what you want the most, both very great rounds and i think you will be very satisfied with either round you pick.

Both are great rounds, but i like the .30-06 better than either.

I ran a route for 30 years and many 270 owners sold or traded off there 270 rifles for some other caliber.
There excuse was they could'nt find blood if the Deer ran off after being shot with there 270's.

I'm not knocking a .308. in fact, i'm considering buying one. I don't know what kind of deer they raise in other places, but i've used a model 760 remy that i bought new in 1977 that has done it's fair share to control the new mexico mulie population. i've used mostly 130 grain core lokts, occasionally win powerpoints. i've killed em as close as 75 yards and some at well over 300. I've seen my dad drop em even closer than that. The point is that a 270 will drop a deer in a heap if it is shot properly.

elk, on the other hand, have always made me a little nervous with the 270. big muscle, big bone. i've killed a few with the 270, but i'm much more confident with a 300 win mag.

In all my years, i've only lost one and that was a shot I took right at dark that I shouldn't have taken anyway.

Boy that's a kinda tough one. I'd say in the hands of a disciplined hunter both are adequate for anything in the lower 48. If I needed something a little flatter shooting, I'd probably grab the .270 with 130 grainers, but I sure do like the short actions rifles. And the .308 sure is accurate out beyond what I should shoot it in most hunting conditions. And yes, Jack O'Conner was something else, and the best ambassador a cartridge ever had.

I've heard that same thing from African PH's, Texas brush country hunters, and guys chasing Canadian whitetails. I've only used 150's in the .270 because I've heard so much through the years about 130's and the lack of blood trails if the deer don't go straight down. Alot of African PH's don't want to see a .270 period.

Both are really good hunting rounds with a large variety of loads and plenty accurate and effective.However,to put a differant perspective on the disscusion,in a SHTF senerio I would pick the .308.You can fire 7.65 rounds in it which will be available by one means or another,due to the fact that it is a Nato round and used by the U.S.,when availability of other calibers dry up.It is also the sniper round of choice

One of my best friends hunts with a .270 Rrem BDL Custom Deluxe. I have seen him drop an 11 point buck in its tracks with it. So there is nothing lacking in stopping power. He was using 130 or 140 Nosler Ballistic tips. A Fine Cartridge and rifle.
I own a Rem 700 Tactical in 308 it shoots great it is a consistent .5 moa rifle when I shoot it on sandbags and I am up to snuff. lol I have not killed a deer with it yet. I got the rifle last year after deer season was over, but I will remedy that this year, God willing.

Either way you are looking at two great cartridges! And throughout the US the availability of both are good. Sure some places may cater to one better than the other, but......you will find both at almost every gun store.

I'm a reloader, so I prefer short action cartridges. I can just about the same performance using less powder, so that saves me some money when I'm shooting. Plus the rifles are a little lighter in the short action.

this is a major difference to consider... the 308, was specified to kill humans.(same goes for an 06) The .270 was specified to kill deer. period.

I own a .270 win. ive shot 4 deer with it and everyone dropped like a rock with 130gr bullets so there shouldnt be any searching for blood trails afterwards. even at 300 yards (which was the first deer i shot with it) they drop. if you shoot a deer with any 270 and it doesnt drop, take up soccer.

I fail to see how a 308 or 30-06 being designed to kill humans has anything at all to do with their ability to kill a deer. I guarantee you the 30-06 is every bit the deer killer a 270 is and probabaly just a touch better. Not taking anything away from the 270, but it just doesn't match up any way you look at it. The bullet choices available for 30 cals. make them hard to beat, for anything you want to do with them. You know Jack O'Conner himself admitted the 30-06 was a great round and he was the main supporter of the 270 early on. In fact if it weren't for him it would not be as popular as it is.

yes, the 30-06 is a great all around caliber. whupty do. i doesnt kill deer any more dead than a .270 or a .308. and all three will put deer down, at longer ranges than most people should be shooting. if people can kill elk with a .25-06, you can kill white tail and mulies with a .270.

I favor the .308 over the .270 because I can use the same bullets for reloading the .308 and .30-06. The shorter bolt throw makes it my favorite big game cartridge.
