"Building a tack Driver"

I would like to build a rifle that I can acurately shoot past 1000 yds. Mabe even 1 mile. I'm not sure where to begin. I was thinking a would buy a good rifle and "upgrade" it. So, what would be a good base rifle to do this. The budget would be around $1000.

I was thinking maybe .408 or .375. I'm not sure if you can even buy the .408 in the us. If any of you know where i could i would appreciate it.

1000 yards to 1 mile is a pretty tall order for the calibers you state.. The 375 with a 210 grain bullet drops over 41 inches at 500 yards and is lumbering along at only around 1800+/- f.p.s. at that range and the 405 is even worse, maybe look into the 30 cals or 6.5 mm's. Savage's law enforcement rifles are real tack drivers or a Remington platform maybe to start with, I am sure some long range shooters here will steer you in the right direction, good luck and keep us posted....

A 10/22 Ruger using the CCI stingers.I believe they say their range is 1 1/2 miles so you should have some to spare. Open sights should do it but if you feel you need a scope,get a 4X tasco. ,,,sam.

300 Win. mag will prolly do it for you but it might cost more than $1000.00 You may can buy a barreled action for a grand, but you'll need a trigger and a stock to.
These items want be cheap either.

I do hope though your able to pull it off if you do a build. Best of luck to you...A.H

1000 yds. huh? $1000 i'd be all over a Sharps or Highwall just to lob bullets at a 300 ft. arc over the ground

I feel you should do a great deal of research.

This is just not in the realm of what can be obtained in a traditional rifle caliber. One thousand yards is an incredible distance and, if nothing else, will require very expensive optics.

Only a very few people, in reality, attempt this kind of distance and it involves much, much more than $1,000.00 to get off the starting block.

I would advise you to find those who do shoot at very long distance targets to get a better feel for what you are trying to accomplish.

Sharps 45/90, won't even need a scope. It won't drive tacks at 1,000, but he can shoot steele and have time to rollover to the spotting scope and spot his own shots!

Not for $1000, and the brass is very high priced....

How about this. Get an AR lower, put a great trigger in it. Then get a 50 BMG upper for it. That'll run you about $1500. There you go. Sorry, $1000 will buy you a scope. You're looking at $3000 total.

50 BMG. 408 chey tac. 338 lapua. all rifles selling for atleast 5K then the ammo. oh boy...

if you want just 1000yds. not mile. the current record for .30 cal is held by a .300 wby. all handloads of course. im sure the rifle and scope were in the 4-5K range though.

maybe look at the 300 RUM, 300 wby, or 300-378 wby? also the 6.5mm/260 rounds are supposed to be quite nice out to 6-800 without wreckinging your shoulder.

You probably will want to spend more to start. I suggest atleast $1500 or so. 300 win mag is a good choice for caliber, but you will have to spend money on barrels since they have a shorter life. Reloading is another good idea if you don't already. You will save money while being able to get more accuracy from your rifle. You will also want to spend money on a good scope like others have said. Probably $400 atleast on the scope. You can build on just about any gun, but if you want to start off small and add little by little to the rifle, Savage is a good out of box gun. Although I don't know how well they will be for upgrading as far as parts go. If you have any other questions the guys at Sniper's Hide Forums - Forums powered by UBB.threads™ can give you answers. well this is my personal opinion .
you wont spend less than $2400 on proper optics to reach that distance . as your distance increases so does your lighting requirement and this is where high end scopes demonstrate their prowess.

and we havent even gotten to the weapon yet.

the first thing to remember that firing over any long distance is more effected by the knowledge and skill of the shooter than by the weapon itself. that being said anyone that has a hope of doing it will be skilled and knowledgeable enough to not need forums to get opinions. its not polite or politically correct but its the truth.
now if you have about $12000 for equipment AND LOTS of ammo and time and someone skilled in the arts to train you it will be possible.

the only weapons i would consider using for this ( you did not state what your real intent is) are either the M82A2 barrett ( you cant get the A3 and most people sell off their A2 for better weapons) or the civilian version of the MK15 called the MacMillan Tac-50 .

in the end it just isnt going to happen.

I shoot with a guy who shoots 1000yds regularly. He has about $7000 in his rig. His Nightforce scope cost $1895. Good luck in your quest!
