Glock .45 vs. 1911 .45

This proposed thread may already be posted. If so, my regrets. If not, I have Glock .45 Mod. 21 SF. I like it OK but yearn for a 1911 - mostly because of it's history and because I carried one in military service back in the 1960's. I am a practical person and cannot afford both. Have you faced this situation? Some advice will be appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Smile Glock

Dan K. Evans: Sir, my friends hounded me about needing a 1911. They won ol
I'd not ever change my Glocks for one. RIA shoots, handles really well
Now that I own the RIA I'll keep it, and will try keeping muscle memory with it, it is a different feel

If you're a practical person, the Glock is generally the practical choice. There are significantly fewer parts to crap out on you. I happen to love both, despite the lumps which accompany them. If you have the big mitts to go around the G21, it's a great no-frills gun, reliable as a stone. The 1911 is what it is, and needs no explanation.

Personal choice has a lot to do with it

I prefer the 1911 Commander style steel frame with 4 inch barrel. For me it just balances and points well.

Also, the 1911 has a lot of aftermarket triggers, grips, hammers, and other accessories to move you forwrd as your budget allows.

How could anyone go wrong with either of those two pistols?! I have a deep admiration for the 1911 and own one.

Problem is....I can't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside with one!

I can hit with a Glock. Although, I must say that I have never shot the 21. They do make a slim model 45 that I have an eye out for. Glocks fit me and I love them.

Practically, the Glock. If you can't have both, just keep the Glock.

I'm sure the G&G Members that know me are waiting with baited breath for my REPLY to this one! LOL

I own both and shoot both. IF I had to pick between the two, I would go with the Glock 21 (big surprise). That must be why I own four of them, and only two 1911s (Colt and Kimber).

If you desire the slim profile of the 1911, but want the simplicity of the Glock, then the Glock Model 36 is your best answer. It is small enough for concealed carry, runs a single stack of six rounds, and can be safely carried with one more in the chamber, for a total of seven. I switched to it from a 1911 for CCW, back in 2004(I think).

If you are looking for a "range gun" then the G21 is a great choice. It has 5 inch barrel, 13 round magazine, and weighs less than a full size 1911.

It's a tough choice, but once you get over the "nostalgic appeal" of the 1911, the Glock 21 is definitely easier to use, maintain, clean, and shoot. Plus it holds 60% more ammo than the 1911, so you spend less time reloading, and more time shooting!

It's personal preference. Period. I'll pick a 1911 every time, because that's my preference. I can shoot a Glock 21 well, but Glocks are not at all comfortable to me, and 1911's are. Perhaps carrying one for a few decades has a bearing on that.

Be glad you have the choice, and the ability to make it.

Since you already own the Glock, I suggest keeping it. In the meantime, save your pennies and get the 1911 when you can.
It's always tough to plan for the future - but who knows? Maybe you will be able to buy or trade for that 1911 sooner than you would think.

I own the 1911. I'll never be without one in the safe. As for the Glock, I have had the good fortune of shooting other peoples Glocks.

Here are some of my perceptions of the two:

The 1911 is heavier, holds fewer rounds. To me the percieved recoil of the 1911 is a little greater, probably because of the poly frame and wider back strap. But the 1911 "bucks" less, I attribute that to the steel frame of the 1911. The 1911 has a manual safety, which I like. And I've got nothing but praise for the trigger of the 1911, they may not be match grade when they come out of the factory, but Glock shooters can only dream about a trigger like you can get on a 1911. The Glock's go bang everytime I've pulled the trigger, it maybe a mushy trigger, but the gun fires.

Accuracy wise. Both guns are more accurate than I am.

Keep the Glock. Selling my G21 SF is my biggest firearm sell regret. And it is much more practical than a 1911 as others have already stated.

I own a personal Glock 23 and a Glock 21 SF and have been issued a Glock 23, Glock 22, and Glock 21SF, . I've shot a 30SF, a 19, and have caressed many others including the Generation 4 Glock 21. I love the Generation 4 magazine release.

That being said, I love my Glocks. They're reliable, easy to strip, easy to clean, easy to load, clear, fire, you name it, and I've successfully qualified as an expert on each and every one of them.

However, I want a 1911 really badly. I'd really love to own a Colt since it was first, but the Kimber TLE II has the features that I would like to have in a 1911. Maybe someday I'll own both. I'm hoping that in the next year I'll finally buy my 1911, but for me that implies buying a couple more holsters, a few more magazines, and probably even more .45 ammo to go with what I've got so the cost isn't only held in the pistol.

I can't give you any advice, but I think you should hold onto the Glock and pickup a 1911 when you can. Save a little each month for it maybe. A 1911, although high on my want list, has never reached the top of my priority list. I keep a Word document (and have for years) of the toys and stuff that I want to buy. I find that it helps me prioritize, and also after a few months of seeing something on the list I'll often realize that I don't want it anymore. I think this saves me buyer's remorse. I recently had a Ruger 10/22 on my list and there was just something about it that didn't sit right with me, and when I learned about and found Marlin 60s I was sold and subsequently ordered one within a week of learning of their qualities.

Even under harsh financial conditions...you can put a 1911 on Layaway

Or heck, piece one together

Buy the Frame, then get the rest when you have the opportunity...

Plasma donations can net you a fair chunk of useable cash every month...around $250...
Sperm Donations can net you a few hundred more per month, but you gotta be in pretty good physical condition

In short, get as many guns/frames as you can before the Dems get re-elected,
for surely not every gun owner is gonna vote, which is a crying shame...because it'll loose us a lot more than an election...

The Glock is more practical but if you had a Glock in one hand and a 1911 in the other and tell me to choose... The 1911 every time.

It's a personal choice, both are fine pistols, I've shot them both but as I've a 1911 , the only thing I wasn't use to on the Glock was the grip angle, a few shots and a little different grip on my part ,and the holes all lined up, the Glock and 1911 are both practical, And I would feel equally armed with either.

I'd personally keep the Glock and take it to some local shows...if the opportunity arises to make a trade of some kind + some cash for a 1911 and it looks like a good deal...take it! Thats part of the fun of gun ownership and going to shows...trading, buying & the art of the deal.
